Baseball
Homer in 10th wins it for Beavs — Adley Rutschman hit a two-out, inside-the-park homer in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday night to give No. 3 Oregon State an 8-7 win over Nevada in a nonconference game at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. It was the second extra-innings victory over the Wolf Pack in as many nights for the Beavers, who prevailed 3-2 on Monday when a Rutschman fly ball to center field was dropped for a run-scoring error. In Tuesday’s game, Nevada (15-11) scored five runs on three home runs in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead. Oregon State came back and took a 7-5 lead with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, all on two-out, bases-loaded walks. Nevada got even with two runs in the ninth off Luke Heimlich, the Beavers’ ace starter who was making a rare relief appearance. Despite getting touched up in his 12⁄3 innings, Heimlich was the winning pitcher, improving to 7-0 when Rutschman’s fourth hit of the night ended the game. The Beavers (23-4) are back in Pac-12 action Friday night when they open a three-game series at Arizona.
Softball
Perfect game highlights UO sweep — Miranda Elish tossed a perfect game, registering 16 strikeouts to lead No. 5 Oregon to a 3-0 win over Portland State in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday night at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene. Elish struck out at least two batters in all seven innings in improving her record to 12-1. April Utecht’s two-run homer was the big blow in the nightcap for the Ducks. Oregon won the first game 8-2 behind the five-hit pitching of Maggie Balint. Shannon Rhodes and Shaye Bowden had two hits apiece and Alexis Mack drove in two runs in the opener for the Ducks (29-6), who return to Pac-12 play with a three-game home series against Arizona starting Friday.
Boxing
Alvarez-Golovkin rematch a no-go — Canelo Alvarez pulled out of his much-anticipated fight with Gennady Golovkin on Tuesday in the wake of his positive drug tests earlier this year. The fight, scheduled for May 5, was expected to be a highlight of the boxing year. The two middleweights are among the most accomplished active fighters, and their first bout in September ended in a hard-fought draw. Golovkin is 37-0-1, and Alvarez is 49-1-2. Alvarez had tested positive for clenbuterol on Feb. 17 and Feb. 21. He claimed that the result came because he had eaten tainted meat in Mexico, where clenbuterol is sometimes given to animals. Clenbuterol is used by some athletes to drop body fat and weight. The Nevada Athletic Commission had scheduled a hearing in two weeks on the matter, and it could suspend Alvarez.
Football
Patriots trade ex-Beaver Cooks to Rams — Tom Brady will be without one of his top receivers from last season after the Patriots traded deep threat Brandin Cooks to the Rams on Tuesday for Los Angeles’ first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, 23rd overall. In the deal, New England also sends a fourth-round choice to the Rams, who give the Patriots a sixth-rounder. Cooks, a 24-year-old former Oregon State standout, was New Orleans’ first-round selection in 2014 and played three seasons for the Saints. He was acquired 13 months ago by New England for a first-rounder and other picks, and he made 65 receptions for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns in his lone season with the Patriots. Cooks could become a free agent after the 2018 season.
