In 2015, Montana newgrass band The Lil Smokies won the best band competition at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The five-piece has been on a whirlwind ride since, with members quitting their day jobs to focus on the band full time, some other members quitting and of course, lots of touring. After snagging another award in 2016 — the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Band of the Year — the new lineup recorded last year’s “Changing Shades” after a successful Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign. The band’s sophomore album bursts with energy and confident playing (the record was primarily recorded live), occupying a space somewhere at the intersection of pop, rock, country and of course, bluegrass. This Central Oregon favorite will return Tuesday for a headlining show at the Domino Room with L.A. band Mapache, ahead of a slot at this year’s Sisters Folk Festival in September.
The Lil Smokies, with Mapache: 8 p.m. Tuesday; $14 plus fees in advance, $17 at the door; Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, midtownballroom.com or 541-408-4329.
