Madras scratches out win at home

MADRAS — Five athletes won individual events for the Madras boys on Thursday, and the White Buffaloes needed every single victory.

Hosting a four-team track and field meet, Madras edged runner-up Crook County by 1.33 points, topping the standings with 81.66 points. Crook County had 80.33 points, followed by Culver with 45 and Condon/Wheeler with nine.

Stefaughn Jackson was first in the 200-meter dash and second in the 800 for Madras, and Allen Jackson took first in the 110 hurdles and third in the high jump. Also winning events for the Buffs were Dalton Waldow in the long jump, Donnie Bagley in the javelin and Austin Charley in the 1,500.

For the Cowboys, Tyler Humeston won the shot put and was second in the discus, while teammate Caleb Parrott took first in the discus and second in the shot put. Jacob Curry won the high jump and the pole vault for Crook County and was second in the long jump.

Kash Michael paced Culver with a victory in the 100 and a second-place finish in the high jump, and the Bulldogs’ Austin Williams was first in the triple jump.

For the girls, Natalia Tewee won the 800 and was third in the high jump to help Madras post 73 points and take first in the four-team standings. Crook County was second with 65 points, followed by Culver with 46 and Condon/Wheeler with 23.

Racquel Smith (200) and Olivia Symons (100) each recorded wins for the White Buffaloes. The Cowgirls’ Kennedy Buckner was first in the long jump, high jump and 400, while Aubrey Love (pole vault) and Emily Mize (1,500) added first-place finishes.

Culver’s Bridget Lopez won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and Catylynn Duff was first in both the shot put and the discus.

La Pine 9, Glide 3: LA PINE — In the midst of playing four games in five days, the Class 3A No. 3-ranked Hawks remained undefeated with a Mountain Valley Conference win. Riley Pinckney and Ben Plant had two hits apiece for La Pine. The Hawks (2-0 MVC, 8-0 overall) plays again Friday, against Knappa, then travels to Klamath Union on Saturday.

Softball

Madras JV 14-16, Culver 6-4: CULVER — Janae Rhen went a perfect 5-for-5 with two RBIs over two games, but the Bulldogs were swept in a nonconference doubleheader. In the first game, Ranae had three hits and drove in a run, Anyla Rico was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Madison Miller went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rhen collected two hits and an RBI in the second game for Culver (0-10), and Kinzi Jagels doubled. Emma Hayes, Esperanza Mendoza and Addison Finley each finished with a hit and an RBI for Culver.

Glide 16, La Pine 3: LA PINE — The Hawks scored once in the second inning after consecutive doubles by Stephanie Westbrook and Cheyenne Saul and added two runs in the third, but La Pine (0-2 MVC, 2-6 overall) fell in Mountain Valley Conference play. McKenzie Walsworth, SueAnn Marsh and Josey Hawkins recorded back-to-back-to-back doubles in the Hawks’ two-run third inning.
