- Ducks and Beavers
Softball
Beavers split with Sun Devils — Freshman Hope Brandner drove in four runs as 25th-ranked Oregon State defeated No. 7 Arizona State 4-2 on Friday to split a Pac-12 doubleheader at OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis. Sun Devils ace Giselle Juarez shut down the Beavers (4-7 Pac-12, 21-16 overall) in the opener, allowing just four hits — none for extra bases — and striking out seven in a 10-1 win. Mariah Mazon’s 11th complete game of the season helped turn the tables on Arizona State (6-2, 32-6) in the nightcap. She struck out six. Brandner finished 2-for-3 at the plate, with McKenna Arriola and Jessica Garcia adding a hit apiece for Oregon State. The series concludes Sunday in Corvallis.
Ducks down Arizona — Gwen Svekis hit two home runs as fifth-ranked Oregon downed No. 9 Arizona 5-2 on Friday at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene. Svekis, a senior, finished the day 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Her second home run — a three-run shot in the sixth inning — broke a 1-1 tie. Shannon Rhodes followed with a solo homer to make it 5-1. Ducks starting pitcher Megan Kleist went the distance, striking out seven in seven innings to improve to 10-5. Arizona (6-4, 27-7) and Oregon (5-2, 30-6) meet for the second game of the three-game series on Saturday.
Baseball
Ducks sweep Cougars — Starting pitchers Matt Mercer and Kenyon Yovan held Washington State to eight hits and struck out 13 over 13 innings as Oregon swept Washington State by scores of 2-1 and 4-2 in Friday’s doubleheader at PK Park in Eugene. Mercer struck out five over six innings in the opener. Yovan finished with eight strikeouts in seven innings in the nightcap. Shane Steer was 3-for-5 in the doubleheader. Daniel Patzloff homered in the nightcap for the Ducks, who improved to 3-8 in the Pac-12 and to 18-11 overall. Oregon and Washington State (3-8, 8-17) close out their three-game series at PK Park on Saturday. If weather forces a cancellation, the game will be played Sunday.
Beavers open up with win in Tucson — Oregon State cruised to a 6-2 victory over host Arizona on Friday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. The Beavers did most of their scoring in the sixth inning when they put three runs across — two of which scored on a fielding error by Wildcats’ shortstop Travis Moniot. Bryce Fehmel allowed one earned run in 62⁄3 innings to improve to 4-1 for Oregon State (7-3, 24-4). Arizona dropped to 17-11 overall and to 2-5 in the Pac-12. The series resumes Saturday.
