Summit High has found a rhythm — and at just the right time.
After opening the baseball season with seven losses in eight games, the Storm have now won two straight Intermountain Conference games, including Friday’s 13-2 victory in five innings over visiting Ridgeview. Summit has exploded offensively and ended the week’s three-game series against the Ravens with back-to-back 13-run games — two of the team’s three most productive offensive performances this season.
The Storm (3-1 IMC, 3-7 overall) wasted little time grabbing a commanding lead. Evan Scalley, Drew Steelhammer and Hayden Love each collected a hit to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning. After Scalley scored on an RBI by Logan Peterson, Sam Waterman belted a three-run homer to earn Summit a 4-0 lead heading into the second inning.
After the Storm extended their advantage to 5-0 in the third, the Ravens (1-2, 2-9) plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning to trim the gap to three.
Summit, however, answered emphatically.
Hank Tobias led off with a double and was followed by a single by Joe Hardy. With one out, Scalley smacked a two-run double, setting up an RBI single from Steelhammer and a run-scoring double by Love that resulted in a 9-2 Storm lead.
All told, Summit sent 12 batters to the plate during an eight-run fourth inning. Dylan Anderman then polished off the victory in the top of the fifth. The senior pitcher went all five innings, fanned seven and allowed just one hit.
Nolan Merritt recorded the lone hit for the Ravens, while Evan Hockett and Ryan Wellman each scored a run.
Scalley, Steelhammer and Love had two hits apiece for Summit, which piled up 12 hits in the team’s second straight win.
