Umpires association to elect commissioner — The Central Oregon Baseball & Softball Umpires Association is accepting candidates in an election to become the organization’s commissioner for the 2019-2021 seasons. The commissioner reports to the association’s executive board and is charged with scheduling umpires for high school and summer baseball and softball games in Central Oregon. It is a paid position, working January through early August. Applications close April 23. To become a candidate or for more information, contact Mike Peterson, the association’s vice president for baseball, at 541-420-7763 or OregonMikeP@gmail.com.

Locals garner weekly honors — Three Central Oregon high school graduates were recently named athletes of the week in their respective collegiate conferences. Oregon Tech junior second baseman Kiahna Brown (Redmond High, 2014) was named the Cascade Conference softball player of the week after batting .409 with four home runs and seven RBIs between March 25 and April 1. Walla Walla (Washington) Community College freshman pitcher Amanda Smith (Sisters High, 2017) was named the Northwest Athletic Conference softball player of the week on March 29. Smith had three homers, including a grand slam, and 12 RBIs in six games. And Alani Troutman (Redmond High, 2016), a sophomore at Western Oregon, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field men’s field athlete for the week ending April 2. Troutman was second in the long jump at the Stanford Invitational with a mark of 24 feet, 3½ inches that is tops in the GNAC this season and fifth all time at WOU. That leap was also an NCAA championships provisional qualifier and ranked seventh-best in Division II this season.

Ravens commit to LC State — Ridgeview seniors Josi Remick and Josye Miller have committed to play volleyball at NAIA Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, next season. The two players helped the Ravens take third place in the Intermountain Conference this past season. Remick was voted to the all-IMC second team, and Miller received all-conference honorable mention.

C.O. grads named to all-academic team — Oregon State senior Annie Sidor, a graduate of Bend’s Summit High, and OSU junior Dakota Steen, of Redmond’s Ridgeview High, have been named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women’s Indoor Track & Field All-Academic team. To be eligible for selection, athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be of at least sophomore standing while participating in more than half of their team’s competitions. Sidor, a pole vaulter, recorded her best mark of the indoor season with a clearance of 11 feet, 10¾ inches at the UW Invitational in January. Steen, who competed in hurdles, posted a personal best in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.64 seconds in February’s Husky Classic.
