The odds were against Summit late in Tuesday’s girls lacrosse matchup against Bend United.
The Storm were a player down after a penalty, and Bend United was attacking, looking for the go-ahead score with only a few minutes remaining.
But after a Bridget Lockrem save, Summit orchestrated a counterattack. The Storm had trailed by four goals at the half and were playing against the No. 8-ranked team in the Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association on its home field at Mountain View. Still, Julia Stites had a clearing, and she fired for her fourth score of the game to put Summit in front 10-9.
With 30 seconds to play, Bend United had one final chance to even things up, but Joren Fettig’s shot was saved again by Lockrem, securing for the Storm a Central Oregon Conference victory.
“It’s not the best score for us,” said Bend United coach Annie Beaver. “Very unexpected, I’d say, but I feel like my girls played really well.”
Beaver said Bend United entered Tuesday’s contest with much anticipation. Her squad was fresh off Sunday’s three-goal win over Sherwood, which had defeated Summit 9-7 the day before.
“Going into it, in my mind, I was saying we should be up by five against Summit, which I know my girls are very capable of,” Beaver said. “And this is just going to fire up our girls.”
Nicole Gallivan had three goals for the Storm (3-0 COC, 6-1 overall), Erin McIntyre added two goals, and Healy Bledsoe scored once.
Fettig led Bend United (1-1, 6-2) with four goals and 11 draw controls. Emma Beaver had three goals and five draw controls, while Sahalie Levine and Athena Peterson each scored once. Patricia Chavira Grever recorded three ground balls, and goalie Kami Doyle had three ground balls and two saves.
“You have to take what you’re given,” said Annie Beaver, already looking forward to the two teams’ next meeting April 30 at Summit High. “Sometimes you have good games, and sometimes we have bad games. We’re super excited to play them again, and I know both teams are going to come out fired up the next time we play each other.”
