A climber who fell 200 feet and died at Smith Rock State Park Tuesday morning has been identified as Alexander J. Reed, 20, of Bend, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
Reed’s next of kin have been notified.
Reed was preparing to rappel down Picnic Lunch Wall at Smith Rock when he fell. The sheriff’s office said witnesses saw Reed fall. He landed on Misery Ridge Trail about 7:50 a.m.
First responders determined Reed had died from the fall, and the coroner was called. A funeral home transported his body.
Misery Ridge Trail was closed briefly.
From 2002 to 2014, three visitors died at Smith Rock. Four had died in the past two years before Tuesday’s death.
