Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra back in Bend

As a music journalist, you get to read some weird things in musician and band biographies, much of it tangentially (if at all) related to the actual music (who knew so many artists went on mystical journeys before recording their albums?). And then every once in a while, you stumble across a Marty O’Reilly, and this quote from his website: “Imagine the delta blues reprised by psychedelic indie rockers.” That describes O’Reilly’s second album with his band The Old Soul Orchestra, February’s “Stereoscope,” to a T. Over the course of 11 songs, O’Reilly marries his no-frills lyrics and song structures to the band’s lockstep rhythms and swirling violins, creating a sound that’s rooted in the past while testing the limits of what blues and folk can be. The Santa Cruz, California, quartet returns to Volcanic Theatre Pub on Thursday in support of the record, with The Riverside opening.

Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra, with The Riverside: 9 p.m. Thursday; $10 plus fees in advance, $12 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatre.com or 541-323-1881.
