History

THIS DATE IN BASEBALL

———

April 13

1914 — The first Federal League game was played in Baltimore and the Terrapins defeated Buffalo, 3-2, behind Jack Quinn. A crowd estimated at 27,000 stood 15 rows deep in the outfield to witness the return of big league baseball to Baltimore.

1953 — For the first time in half a century, a new city was represented in the American or National leagues. The Braves moved from Boston to Milwaukee and opened in Cincinnati, where Max Surkont set down the Reds, 2-0.

1954 — Henry Aaron made his major league debut in left field for the Milwaukee Braves and went 0-for-5 in a 9-8 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Cincinnati’s Jim Greengrass hit four doubles in his first major league game.

1963 — Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds tripled off Pittsburgh’s Bob Friend for his first major league hit.

1972 — The first player strike in baseball history ended.

1984 — Pete Rose got his 4,000th hit, a double off Philadelphia pitcher Jerry Koosman. The hit came exactly 21 years after his first hit.

American League

Red Sox 6, Yankees 3

BOSTON — Rick Porcello pitched seven scoreless innings and Mookie Betts drove in two runs to lead Boston. Porcello stayed in after a 45-minute rain delay and was working on a no-hitter before Aaron Judge’s leadoff double in the seventh. Andrew Benintendi and Mitch Moreland each had two hits and drove in a run.

Giants 7, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO — Chris Stratton and reliever Derek Law combined on a one-hitter, and Hunter Pence’s broken-bat, two-run bloop single highlighted a three-run first inning that lifted San Francisco to a blowout win. Stratton kept the Padres mostly off the bases through seven innings. He allowed their only hit, a one-out single in the third by pitcher Clayton Richard, who was pinch-hitting for starter Bryan Mitchell. Richard was doubled off after Franchy Cordero lined out to shortstop. San Diego’s position players went hitless. Stratton struck out four, walked three and retired his final eight batters. The only time a runner got into scoring position against him was when he walked Freddy Galvis and Carlos Asuaje with one out in the fifth. Law, recalled from Triple-A Sacramento before the game, threw two perfect innings. It was the Giants’ third shutout. The Padres have been blanked twice. Mitchell was wild, walking five to give him 14 in three starts. He allowed three runs and four hits while striking out two.

CINCINNATI — Jose Martinez drove in six runs and Yadier Molina homered in his return from a one-game suspension, powering St. Louis to a victory that left Cincinnati mired in its worst start since 1955. The Cardinals homered a season-high four times while piling up a season high in runs. The Reds helped by walking 11 batters, three of them with the bases loaded.
