MADRAS — Shawna McConnell has been preaching what she calls “team swings.”
The Madras softball coach does not want her players to swing for the fences or even for extra-base hits. McConnell prefers hard grounders or line-drive singles.
Much like the White Buffaloes did in their 10-0 Tri-Valley Conference win over Estacada on Friday.
“That’s something we’ve been hammering home,” McConnell said, “and we were singling all day and just kept running and running.”
Madras (4-0 TVC, 8-3 overall) scored two runs each in the bottom of the first and second innings to jump in front 4-0 before adding two more runs to widen its lead to 6-0 in the fourth.
A four-run fifth inning, capped by a two-run single by Arysta Pineda, secured the White Buffaloes’ win via the 10-run rule.
Pineda went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Buffs, while Jalaney Suppah and Mary Olney each added two hits and an RBI. Genesis Quiroz was 2-for-3, and Lizzie Steuart allowed just three hits in a complete game that extended Madras’ winning streak to seven games.
“They’re motivated and determined to keep chipping away,” McConnell said of her squad, noting that Madras is due to play TVC powers Gladstone and Crook County in the coming weeks. “I’ve had teams in the past that have been worried about the next games. This team, these guys are excited about the next opponents.”
