Ridgeview makes it 3 straight over Bend

REDMOND — His team having lost twice earlier in the week to Ridgeview, Bend High softball Wade Kinkade knew going into Friday’s game against the league-leading Ravens that the challenge would be considerable.

And it got even tougher when he asked his team for a show of hands to determine how many of the Lava Bears would be going to the prom Friday night and therefore missing the softball game. A lot of hands were raised.

“We had four of our regular varsity players today,” said Kinkade after his team absorbed a somewhat predictable 23-0 Intermountain Conference defeat at Ridgeview.

But the veteran Bend coach was nothing if not understanding.

“As the father of a daughter who is a recent high school graduate,” Kinkade said, “there was no way I would take that (the prom) away from a high school girl.”

“They were at a disadvantage today,” said Ridgeview coach Sandy Fischer. “They weren’t at full strength, and we were.”

That much was evident early, as the Ravens sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored 12 runs.

By game’s end, 10 Ridgeview players had at least one of the team’s 16 hits. The Ravens also played errorless ball behind pitchers Allicite Frost and Cassidy Bunting, who combined on a two-hitter that included seven strikeouts and no walks.

“I was proud of our kids the way they stayed focused,” said Fischer, whose team has not lost since its season opener at Hermiston a month ago and is now 6-0 in IMC play and 11-1 overall.

Frost hit a two-run homer and had four RBIs for the Ravens, and Kiani Nakamura was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Reece Zachary and Olivia Dority each had a single for the Lava Bears (0-3 IMC, 3-9-1 overall).
