Softball
Ducks blank Sun Devils — Megan Kleist struck out 10 and limited No. 7 Arizona State to three hits in No. 3 Oregon’s 5-0 win at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, in their Pac-12 series opener on Friday. Kleist improved to 13-4 with her 12th complete game of the season. Jenna Lilley and Mary Iakopo homered for the Ducks (8-2 Pac-12, 33-6 overall). Danielle Gibson had two of the Sun Devils’ three hits. Arizona State (7-3, 33-6) and Oregon are back at it Saturday.
Beavers win opener at Stanford — Missy Nunes and Hope Brandner homered to back a Mariah Mazon’s strong start as Oregon State opened a three-game Pac-12 series at Stanford with a 4-1 win on Friday. Mazon (10-10) struck out five while limiting the Cardinal to one run and five hits at Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, California. Whitney Burks doubled in the lone run for Stanford (2-8, 22-17). Oregon State (5-8, 22-17) faces the Cardinal in the second of three games on Saturday.
BASEBALL
Beavers drub Missouri State — Trevor Larnach hit two of Oregon State’s five home runs in the No. 7 Beavers’ 17-6 win over No. 24 Missouri State in the first game of a doubleheader at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri, on Friday. The second game was suspended because of rain with Oregon State leading 10-1 in the second inning; the teams will complete that game prior to Saturday’s finale of the three-game nonconference series. Cadyn Grenier, Andy Armstrong and Tyler Malone all also homered for the Beavers in Friday’s first game to make a winner of starter Luke Heimlich (8-1), who struck out 10 and gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings. Michael Gretler hit a grand slam in the second inning of the second game to help get OSU (25-6) off to a big early lead on the Bears (22-9) before the weather turned.
Ducks drop opener at Washington — Oregon starting pitcher Matt Mercer allowed two runs on six hits over 72⁄3 innings but took the loss as Washington held off the Ducks 2-1 on Friday at Husky Ballpark in Seattle. The Huskies (7-3, 16-14) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first — one on a wild pitch and the next via Willie Maclver’s RBI single. Oregon (5-8, 18-14) scored its only run on Gabe Matthews’ solo home run in the top of the second. The teams return to Husky field for the second of a three-game weekend set on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Seahawks sign Sebastian Janikowski — The Seattle Seahawks are hoping Sebastian Janikowski can solve their kicking issues. Seattle signed Janikowski on Friday amid a number of moves by the team. Seattle also signed quarterback Stephen Morris to have another arm on the roster behind Russell Wilson. Running back J.D. McKissic and defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson signed their exclusive rights free agent contracts for the 2018 season. Janikowski spent 17 seasons with the Oakland Raiders but missed the 2017 season due to a back injury. Janikowski, 40, has made 80.4 percent of his kicks during his career and holds the NFL record with 55 field goals of 50 yards or longer. Janikowski will join former Jacksonville kicker Jason Myers in the competition to replace Blair Walsh, who was inconsistent in his one season as the Seahawks kicker last year.
