Crook County ekes out win over Marshfield

COOS BAY — Crook County needed to place seventh or better in the 4×400-meter relay, the final event, to claim the title at the Prefontaine Rotary Invitational on Saturday. And the quartet of Tyler Lawson, Dominic Langley, Thaiden Mullan and Victor Ramirez came through.
With a sixth-place finish in the last event, the Cowboys totaled 100 points to defeat second-place Marshfield by two points at the 27-team track and field meet.
“This just sets the tone,” said Crook County coach Ernie Brooks. “We’re five weeks away from districts, and we’re pushing towards it.”
The Cowboys’ Zachary Guthrie won the long jump with a personal-record leap of 21 feet, 4 inches, and Noah Chaney was first in the pole vault. Guthrie was also second in the 100-meter dash for the Cowboys, Jonas Rice was second in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the pole vault, and Caleb Parrott took second in the discus. Crook County’s Jacob Curry tied for third in the high jump, and Langley was third in the long jump.
Kenna Woodward won the shot put with a PR of 39-3 for the Crook County girls, who were fourth as a team with 57.33 points. Laguna Beach (California) won with 105 points. Also for the Cowgirls, Gracie Kasberger took third in the 400 and fourth in the long jump, Jeanette Carne was third in the 3,000, and Marjorie Hutchins and Esther Brewer placed fifth in the triple jump and javelin, respectively.

Lava Bears girls win at Classic: CENTRAL POINT — Emily Showers, Elishka Pierce, Taylor Petz and Siera Crawford swept the top four spots of the pole vault to lead the Bend girls to 137 points and a first-place finish at the 21-team Crater Classic. Grants Pass was second with 82.5 points. Leah Richards won the triple jump and was second in the long jump for the Lava Bears, while Kayla Rambo won the discus with a PR of 142-0 and placed third in the shot put. For the Bend boys, who were fourth as a team with 80.5 points, Raymond Blasquez won the 100 and took third in the 200 and fourth in the high jump. Brady Petz was first in the 300 hurdles, and Wade Jacobus won the pole vault. South Medford topped the team standings with 124 points.
Storm 3rd at Relays: EUGENE — With a win in the 4×800 relay in 9:35.45, a third-place finish in the 1,600 sprint medley relay and a fourth-place showing in the 4×400 relay, the Summit girls finished with 37 points to take third at the 65-team Oregon Relays at Hayward Field. Valor Christian (Colorado) won with 74 points. Emma Normand highlighted the Storm individually by placing sixth in the 100 and seventh in the 200. For the Summit boys, who were 10th with 25 points, Noah Turnbull was third in the discus and seventh in the hammer throw. The Storm took second in the 4×800 relay and sixth in the 1,600 sprint medley relay. Central Catholic topped the team standings with 47 points.
Buffs, Cougs place high at invite: OREGON CITY — Madras’ Dalton Waldow won the boys 200 and was second in the long jump and third in the 100 at the Willamette Falls Invitational. No team scores were reported. The White Buffaloes’ Chat Thurby and Leo Gutierrez placed first in the boys 100 and 400, respectively, while Mountain View’s Reed Sehorn placed second in the discus and third in the shot put. The Cougars’ Luke Schulz was third in the boys javelin. For the girls, Mountain View’s Cassidy Hughes won the shot put and the discus and was second in the javelin, and teammate Kelsey Swenson won both the 1,500 and the 3,000. Madras’ Olivia Symons placed second in the long jump, third in the 100 and fifth in the 200.
Softball
West Albany 14, Mountain View 2: Stepping outside of Intermountain Conference play for the final time in the regular season, the Class 5A Cougars fell in five innings to the 6A No. 7-ranked Bulldogs. Singles by Kayla Berg and Nikki Young were the only two hits of the day for host Mountain View, which trailed 5-0 before West Albany scored eight runs in the fourth inning with the help of a number of the Cougars’ seven errors for the game. Emma Romero drove in a run for Mountain View (2-6 overall).
Baseball
Silverton 7, Mountain View 2: The Cougars (1-12) fell in a nonconference home game.
Madras 4, Estacada 1: ESTACADA — Tyler Lockey struck out nine in five innings and also had a hit and two RBIs to lead the White Buffaloes to a Tri-Valley Conference win. Lewis Fine had a hit for Madras (3-1 TVC, 8-4 overall), while Brandon Desjardins and Cameron Rodriguez each drove in a run.
Girls tennis
Buffs doubles, Cowgirls singles place: MADRAS — With the tandem of Jessica Olivera and Erika Olivera placing second at No. 1 doubles, Madras recorded 93 points as a team to tie for fifth place at the eight-team Madras Rankin Invitational. Total games one by each team’s top two singles players and doubles teams made up the final score. Vale topped the standings with 148 points. Crook County, which was seventh with 57 points, was highlighted by Odessa Green, who was third at No. 2 singles. Sisters rounded out the team standings with 57 points.
Girls lacrosse
Summit 7, Wilson 1: Julia Stites scored seven goals and freshman goalie Bridget Lockrem made 19 saves, leading Summit to the nonleague home win over the Trojans from Portland. Erin McIntyre, Maggie Hawkins, Nicole Gallivan and Spencer Hurley scored two goals apiece for the Storm (7-1), who led 9-5 at halftime and pulled away in the second half.
Bend United 11, Grant 4: Host Bend United scored all of its goals in the first half and rolled to the nonconference win. Joren Fettig scored five goals and had six ground balls to pace Bend United (7-2). Other scorers for the winners included Kaylene Oates and Sahalie Levine with two goals apiece. Also for Bend, Zoe Wydra had six ground balls, Patricia Chavira Grever had five ground balls and two forced turnovers, Mary Theobald had four draw controls, and goalie Martha Schwarz had three saves and three ground balls.
Boys lacrosse
Sprague 12, Sisters 2: SISTERS — Noah Keeton and Kinnon Rutherford each had a goal, but the Outlaws fell in nonconference play. Judah Keeton had an assist for Sisters (3-4), and Casey Warburton made 13 saves in goal.
Boise (Idaho) 18, Ridgeview 2: REDMOND — The shorthanded Ravens (5-3) dropped a nonconference game. Brantley Biondi and Jake Matheson scored goals for Ridgeview.
Lincoln 18, Summit 7: Five players scored, but the Storm (1-5) dropped their third straight nonconference game. Justin Radatti, Jason Ward, Henry Bledsoe, Liam Ross and Paddy Bergin scored one goal apiece for Summit, while Colton Yundt made eight saves.
