Charles McDew, 79: an activist whose three arrests in two days as a college student for violating South Carolina’s forbidding racial codes transformed him into a civil rights pioneer. Died April 3 in West Newton, Massachusetts of a heart attack.

John Melcher, 93: a Montana Democrat who served 20 years in Congress, succeeding the storied Sen. Mike Mansfield and embracing economic development and environmental protections for a state rich in natural resources and pristine wilderness. Died Thursday in Missoula, Montana.
