Robert Alan Manning, 64, of Lebanon, formerly of La Pine, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Edward C. Allworth Veterans’ Home in Lebanon.
He was born September 29, 1953, in Oakridge to Charles V. and Vivian Marie (Queen) Manning.
Rob grew up in Oakridge. He served his country in the United States Army beginning in 1970 when he was just 17 years old. Rob married Glenda Jean Goodwin on September 30, 1972, in Springfield. He served as a Crew Chief on fixed wing aircraft as well as a Construction Equipment Repairer. Rob traveled many places during the 18 years he spent in the Army including Germany, Thailand, and Alaska. During his service, Rob earned the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Rifle M16 Sharpshooter Qualified Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal 3D Award.
After the service, he worked as a Radio Dispatcher in Nome, Alaska for 13 years before retiring in 2003 as a Community Service Officer with the Nome, Alaska Police Department. Rob moved to La Pine in 2003 where he lived until coming to Lebanon in 2016.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 45 in La Pine and also belonged to Band of Brothers in Bend and La Pine as well as the Disabled American Veterans and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Rob enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and “grand dogs.” He was a great dad and even better grandfather. Rob loved spending time with his beloved wife, Glenda who he loved unconditionally. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an award winning fly tyer. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Rob is survived by his wife, Glenda Manning of Lebanon; son, Del Manning of Houston, Texas; daughter, Heather Cain of Eugene; brother, Joe Manning of Springfield; sisters, Joann Manning of La Pine and Joyce Manning of Ferndale, Washington; and grandchildren, Bree Bowman of Portland, Michaela Manning of Enterprise, Mississippi, Alex and Abbi Turner of Houston, Texas, Jaelie VanDusen of Junction City, and Emma and Karsen Manning of Enterprise, Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles V. Manning; mother, Vivian Marie Fox; grandmother, Edna Queen; grandfather, Joe Queen; brother, Charles V. Manning Jr.; and sister, Vernetta Taylor.
A service of remembrance was at the American Legion Post #45 in La Pine. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
