Music fans are a bit spoiled in Central Oregon. In addition to enjoying a concert schedule that could put some much bigger cities to shame, Bend has two independent record stores to choose from — quite a feat in this age of declining physical music sales and store closures. Any day is a good day to support Ranch Records and Recycle Music, Bend’s two brick-and-mortar holdouts, but if you haven’t stopped by either in a while, Saturday is the day. That’s because it’s Record Store Day, an annual (since 2007), international celebration of independent record stores marked by exclusive vinyl, CD and cassette releases.
Ranch expects to have close to 300 Record Store Day titles plus some special giveaways, according to owner John Schroeder; Recycle will have more than 120, according to owner Keith Schuman. As in past years, Recycle will go all out with a full day of live music performances, food and beverages starting in the back room at 12:30 p.m. and featuring The D&T Experience (that’s Recycle clerk/longtime musician Dean Prescott and Schuman’s wife, Tracie Schuman), Guardian of the Underdog, Hot Club of Bend, Cosmonautical, Solo Viaje, Shade 13 and more.
