John 5 likes to turn his shows with The Creatures into a game.

“Because we play so many shows in a row, we try to see how close to perfection we can get it,” the guitarist born John Lowery said recently while traveling near King City, California. He will perform with The Creatures at the Domino Room on Thursday.

“… (It’s) getting it close to the record, not messing up, not going out of tune, not going out of time, having precision and being precise.”

John 5 — best known as the former guitarist for Marilyn Manson and current guitarist with Rob Zombie’s band — has released nine instrumental solo albums since 2004, including January’s live set “It’s Alive!” and last year’s studio record with The Creatures, “Season of the Witch.” Instrumental music might suggest lengthy jam sessions or long-winded solo passages. But like his work with Manson and Zombie, John 5’s solo music is precisely mapped out.

“Back when I was a kid, I would go see bands, and I was so impressed if they would play something just like the record,” he said. “… Maybe some people love that certain drum fill, or they love that certain guitar lick, and sometimes, they don’t play it, and you’re like, ‘Ahhh!’”

He certainly has experience with that, having worked with a wide range of artists in all genres, including David Lee Roth (appearing on the Van Halen singer’s 1998 album “DLR Band”), Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Garbage, k.d. lang, Meat Loaf and Rick Springfield.

His tenure with Rob Zombie, which began in 2006, is the longest time he’s spent in a band (he was with Manson’s band from 1998 until 2003). Zombie just completed a new studio album that John 5 called “the best record he’s ever done by far.”

“Season of the Witch” marks the first John 5 album recorded with and credited to The Creatures, featuring bassist Ian Ross and drummer Logan Nix. Tunes range from the rollicking, riff-filled opener “Book of Spells” to the country pickin’ of “Hell Haw I.G.R.”

“The bass is so intense, and the drums are so intense, so I just wanted to credit them,” John 5 said. “There so much going on, so much going on, and they deserve it.”

Fans can expect his next studio album with The Creatures, for which he has written five tunes so far, to feature more stylistic experimentation, but with a focus on strong melody.

“I think it’s very, very important to have something for the people to latch onto, so it’s just not crazy, crazy, crazy all the time,” he said. “… Again, we’re creating these songs that people are going to be listening to, and you have to have something like that. It’s so important, or it’s just gonna go in one ear and out the other.”
