A 10-year-old boy from Bend was airlifted to a Portland-area trauma center following a crash that closed the southbound Bend Parkway for about an hour Thursday morning.

A 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 33-year-old Bend man was traveling north on the parkway near NW Hawthorne Avenue when it crossed the center median and collided with a 2004 Subaru Impreza traveling south, Bend Police reported. Police have not released the names of the drivers.

The Subaru’s driver, a 27-year-old Bend man, did not have any noticeable injuries, but his passenger, the 10-year-old boy, was initially taken to St. Charles Bend with life-threatening injuries and then taken by air ambulance to Portland. The Silverado’s driver was trapped inside his truck until Bend Fire Department personnel removed him and transported him to St. Charles Bend with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bend Police, Oregon State Police and the Oregon Department of Transportation are still investigating the crash. Bend Police want witnesses to contact the department at 541-693-6911.
