BASEBALL
Beavs win Civil War series opener — Luke Heimlich struck out 12 to become Oregon State’s all-time strikeouts leader, and Trevor Larnach and Tyler Malone homered to lead the No. 6-ranked Beavers to a 5-2 win over Oregon in the Thursday night opener of a three-game Pac-12 series at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. En route to his ninth win of the season, Heimlich (9-1) held the Ducks to four hits over 7 1/3 innings. And with his seventh strikeout of the night, the junior left-hander passed Jonah Nickerson (2004-06) for the OSU record. Heimlich now has 305 strikeouts in 76 career games. Larnach’s homer, a solo shot in the third inning, was his 11th of the season and put the Beavers up 3-1. Malone capped the scoring for Oregon State with a two-run homer in the fifth. Cadyn Grenier and Nick Madrigal had two hits apiece for OSU (8-5 Pac-12, 27-6 overall). Kyle Kasser had two hits and an RBI to lead Oregon (6-10, 19-16). Game 2 of the series is Friday afternoon.

No. 4 Ducks top No. 2 Sooners — Megan Kleist pitched a one-hitter and D.J. Sanders hit a two-run homer in the first inning Thursday to lead fourth-ranked Oregon to a 5-1 nonconference win over second-ranked Oklahoma at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene. The Ducks’ victory ended a 30-game winning streak for the Sooners (39-3). Kleist improved to 14-5, striking out five and walking one in the shutout. Oklahoma starter Paige Parker lost for just the second time this season and is now 21-2. Mary Iakopo added a solo home run in the third inning for Oregon (35-7), which also got two hits apiece from Mia Camuso and Lauren Lindvall. The Ducks open a three-game Pac-12 home series against Stanford on Friday night. The Sooners travel to Corvallis for games against Oregon State on Friday and Saturday.
