Bend High’s Tysen Scott hit a walkoff double to left field to score Reese Gordon, giving the Lava Bears a 7-6 Intermountain Conference baseball win over league-leading Summit on Friday afternoon and avoiding what would have been the third straight loss to the Storm this week.

Bend (4-2 IMC, 8-6 overall) came into the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 6-5, and Kyle Reed led off with a bunt single before advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Marshall Davis.

Gordon then hit a single to right field, and Reed scored to tie the game 6-6. Steve Talamantes drew a walk from Summit’s Dylan Anderman, who pitched the full game, before Scott sliced a double down the line that just eluded Storm left fielder Kincade Mickel to score Gordon from second base.

Reed, who finished the day 2-for-4, also hit a solo home run for Bend. Cooper Simmonds pitched the first six innings for the Lava Bears, striking out 10, and Cole Frey pitched the seventh, retiring three straight batters.

Logan Peterson belted a home run for the Storm (8-2, 8-8), and Evan Scalley hit a triple.

“That’s a good team,” said Bend coach Kevin Cooper, referring to a Summit squad that beat the Bears 12-4 on Tuesday and 1-0 at Summit on Wednesday. “We think we’ve got a good team too.”

Summit plays a three-game set against Mountain View next week, while Bend faces Redmond four times in as many days Tuesday through Friday, including the makeup of an earlier rainout.

The Storm and Lava Bears are scheduled to meet one more time, May 11 at Summit.
