Teen feats

• Jared Durham, of Troop 9119 in Redmond, earned his Eagle Scout rank on April 12. For his Eagle Scout community service project, Jared and volunteers contributed 127 hours building raised garden beds for M.A. Lynch Elementary School. Jared is a senior at Ridgeview High School and the son of Janice and Andy Durham.

• Niko Smiley, of Troop 120 in Bend, earned his Eagle Scout rank on April 12. For his Eagle Scout community service project, Niko and volunteers contributed 164 hours building a cross-country running trail at Cascade Middle School. He is a senior and class president at Summit High School. Niko is the son of David Smiley and Marika (and Aaron) Yuma.

• High school students from Redmond competed at the 76th annual Future Business Leaders of America state conference in Portland earlier this month, which included over 1,500 Oregon high school students participating in over 65 events. The following 15 winners qualify to participate at the national competition in Baltimore in June:

From Redmond High School: first place — Lily Lee; second place — Nicole Halkola, Ashley Green, Brady Barnes, Oscar Lepe and Anthony Reinemer; third place — Sinai Lepe, Ina Payton and Jose Silva.

From Ridgeview High School: first place — Garrett Crouch; second place — Jay Patel and Averi Hartford; third place — Carly Christianson; fourth place — Gabrielle Crouch and Aria Mascall.

Other winners included Salvador Lara, Devyn Franks-Lopez and Jordan Fairbank from Redmond High School and Rainey Shriver, Marrin Nyman, Jordan DeVoe and Hayden Burgess from Ridgeview High School.

Administration notes

• Kevin Milner has been selected to become Buckingham Elementary School’s principal. Milner has been an elementary school principal in Newburgh School District for 19 years and was a teacher in Portland and Tigard for 11 years. He will start July 1.

• Bend-La Pine Schools have selected four high school assistant principals beginning July 1: Gabe Pagano will serve as assistant principal at Bend High School when Michael Hicks assumes the role of principal at Mountain View High School; Susie Heydon and Matt Kitchen will serve as assistant principals at Mountain View when Mike Franklin assumes the principal role at Skyline High School and Sean Corrigan assumes a role at Crook County School District; Reno Holler will serve as assistant principal at Summit High School when Michael McDonald assumes the role of principal at Summit High School.

• Dave Hood, athletic director at Mountain View High School, has been selected as Athletic Director of the Year by the Oregon Athletic Directors Association, representing all 4A, 5A and 6A districts in Oregon. Hood has been athletic director at Mountain View for 16 years. Before being AD, he was a teacher and coach in Bend-La Pine Schools for 22 years.

• Healthy Beginnings has received a multi-year grant of $94,000 from The Ford Family Foundation, which will be used to connect rural families to free comprehensive health and development assessments for children from birth to 5 years old.
