- Ducks and Beavers
BASEBALL
Beavers complete sweep of Ducks — Trevor Larnach belted a three-run homer in the first inning to get Oregon State rolling in a 12-5 Pac-12 win over Oregon on Saturday, polishing off a sweep of the three-game series for the sixth-ranked Beavers at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. OSU extended its lead to 9-0 with a six-run third inning that featured a three-run double by Adley Rutschman and a two-run homer by Michael Gretler. Tyler Malone also homered and joined Rutschman and Steven Kwan with three hits each in the Beavers’ 19-hit assault on seven Ducks pitchers. Jakob Goldfarb, Gabe Matthews and Jonny DeLuca had two hits apiece for the Ducks. Nonconference road games versus the University of Portland are up next for both Oregon State (10-5 Pac-12, 29-6 overall) and Oregon (6-12, 19-18). The Beavers face the Pilots on Tuesday at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro; the Ducks are at UP on Wednesday.
FOOTBALL
Youngsters shine in UO spring game — Redshirt freshman running back C.J. Verdell rushed for two touchdowns and a game-high 44 yards, and redshirt freshman wide receiver Daewood Davis caught two touchdown passes Saturday for the Oregon Ducks in their annual spring game at Autzen Stadium. Behind Verdell and Davis, the Thunder (offense) outscored the Lightning (defense) 41-7. Justin Herbert, a third-year starter at quarterback, completed 12 of 21 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown, though he did throw one interception — a pass late in the first quarter that senior linebacker Laulana Apelu returned 100 yards for a TD. Daewood’s scoring catches were of 36 and 28 yards, the first from true-freshman quarterback Tyler Shough that was followed by a successful PAT kick by redshirt sophomore Zach Emerson, a graduate of Bend’s Mountain View High School. Another redshirt sophomore from Bend, tight end Cam McCormick from Summit High, made one catch for minus-2 yards.
SOFTBALL
Ducks take another from Cardinal — Stanford scored an unearned run in the first inning, but Jenna Lilley got it back for No. 4 Oregon with a leadoff homer in the home half and the Ducks went on to a 4-1 Pac-12 victory Saturday at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene. Oregon has now taken the first two games of the three-game series and has beaten the Cardinal 18 consecutive times. Megan Kleist struck out seven in a six-hitter that hiked her record to 15-5. Mary Iakopo was 3-for-3 for the Ducks (11-3 Pac-12, 37-7 overall), who nosed ahead of Washington for second place in the conference standings when the Huskies lost to first-place UCLA earlier Saturday. The Cardinal (2-12, 22-22) and the Ducks play the series finale Sunday.
No. 2 Sooners shut down Beavers — Second-ranked Oklahoma completed a two-game nonconference sweep of Oregon State on Saturday, blanking the Beavers for the second straight game in an 8-0 win at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis. The game was scoreless until the Sooners (41-3) scored three runs in the fourth inning. They added four in the fifth and another run in the sixth, and the contest ended via the eight-run rule when the Beavers (26-19) were unable to score in the home half of the sixth. Jessica Garcia and Shelby Weeks each had two of Oregon State’s five hits. The Beavers return to Pac-12 action Friday in the opening game of a three-game series at Arizona.
