Storm hold off Newberg, claim victory in overtime

NEWBERG — Julia Stites’ sixth goal of the day came early in overtime, and it gave Summit a 13-12 win over Newberg in a nonconference girls lacrosse match Saturday afternoon.

The host Tigers charged back from a five-goal deficit and tied the score 12-12 with a goal in the final minute of regulation time. Stites broke the deadlock about a minute into overtime, securing Summit’s 10th win of the season overall against just one defeat.

Erin McIntyre scored three goals and Spencer Hurley scored two for the Storm. Nicole Gallivan and Healy Bledsoe also scored a goal apiece for Summit, which got five assists from Stites and three more from Ashlyn Radatti.

Girls lacrosse

Bend United 15, South Salem 3: Mia Morey scored three goals early in the third quarter to spark a second-half surge for Bend United, which turned a 5-2 halftime lead into a nonconference rout of the visiting Saxons. Kaylene Oates led Bend in scoring with five goals. Morey finished with four, and Joren Fettig had three goals to go with 14 draw controls, 10 ground balls, three caused turnovers and two assists. Also for Bend United (9-2 overall), Sahalie Levine had two goals and an assist, Teanna Russell scored a goal, and Athena Peterson had nine ground balls and two assists.

Boys lacrosse

Southridge 16, Ridgeview 4: REDMOND — The Ravens (5-4) dropped their second straight nonconference contest.

Hood River Valley 9, Bend 8: HOOD RIVER — The Lava Bears (5-8) lost a nonleague game.

Tualatin 17, Summit 4: TUALATIN — The Storm (1-8) fell in nonconference play.

Track and field

Grizzlies reach podium: KLAMATH FALLS — Skyla Newton took fourth in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles to help the Gilchrist girls post nine points and place 17th at the 25-team Lithia/Mazama Invitational. The Grizzlies’ Rayenee Hoover was eighth in the high jump. Monroe topped the team standings with 92 points. The Gilchrist boys did not post a team score as their top finisher was Cody Metzler, who was 12th in the javelin with a personal-record throw of 127-0. North Valleys, from Nevada, won with 79 points.

Girls tennis

Summit falls in final: ROSEBURG — After powering past Barlow 8-0 in the semifinals, the Storm lost 5-3 against Roseburg at the Roseburg Invitational at Umpqua Valley Tennis Center. Summit’s Sophie Wecker and Sabryna Adrianson did not drop a game in a straight-set win at No. 1 doubles in the semis, while Emmaline Fievet recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. In the championship, Anika Groener, Fievet and Whitney Walden each won singles matches for the Storm. Bend fell to Roseburg 7-1 in the gold bracket semifinals and lost to Barlow 10-8 in sets to take fourth as a team. Ashley Placek recorded the lone Lava Bears victory against Roseburg with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. Bend’s Sophie Rolie won 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 3 singles against Barlow, while the Bears’ tandem of Liv Slocum and Placek won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 doubles. Heather Davenport was 2-0 in singles matches for Mountain View, which lost 5-3 to Junction City in the silver bracket semifinals before defeating Grants Pass 68-59 in games to take sixth as a team. Also for the Cougars, Maria Larreneta was unbeaten in a pair of doubles matches — a 6-4, 6-1 win with Felicia Hall against Junction City and a 6-3, 6-4 victory with Liliana Overcash against Grants Pass.

Boys tennis

Storm win invitational: EUGENE — Cade Doan won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles in Summit’s 7-1 win over Ashland, and he followed with a 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-4 win at No. 4 singles in the Storm’s 7-1 victory over Madras as Summit claimed the Bigfoot Invitational championship at Eugene Swim & Tennis Club. Against Ashland, the Storm’s Dylan Warren and Joshua Marine dropped just one game in a straight-set win, as did Summit’s tandem of Cole Capatani and Matthew Merzbach. Logan Hausler recorded a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 comeback victory at No. 1 singles for the Storm in the championship against Marist, and Ryan Abbott posted a 6-1, 6-7, 10-2 win at No. 2 singles.
