Storm pull off sweep at Summit Invitational

It is one thing to host one of the state’s largest high school track and field meets of the regular season. It is another to defend your home turf.

Summit did both Saturday.

With Haley Smith winning the discus and javelin and placing third in the shot put for the girls, and with Ryan Tennant taking first in the long jump and the triple jump for the boys, the Storm completed a sweep of the team titles in the 21-team Summit Invitational.

The Storm girls totaled 180.5 points, Jesuit was second with 122.5 points, followed by Bend with 88.5, Newberg with 54 and Mountain View with 45. The Summit boys finished with 113 points and were followed by Jesuit with 79 points, Bend High with 64, Ridgeview with 54 and Newberg with 53.

Smith set the school record with a winning throw of 140 feet, 5 inches in the javelin for Summit, and Isabel Max was first in the 800-meter run with a personal-record time of 2 minutes, 15.31 seconds. Kelsey Gripekoven won the 3,000 for the Storm, and Asha Turnbull was first in the triple jump, third in the long jump and fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Emily Showers and Elishka Pierce went 1-2 in the pole vault to lead Bend, while Grace Toney won the 300 hurdles in a PR 45.76 seconds and took second in the 400. Maya Hopwood was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200 for the Lava Bears, and Kayla Rambo was runner-up in the discus. For Mountain View, Jasmine Martin won the long jump and was second in the high jump and fifth in the 100 hurdles, and Cassidy Hughes was second in the shot put and fifth in both the discus and javelin.

Jordynn Slater was first in the shot put with a PR throw of 42-3 for La Pine, which was seventh as a team with 27 points. Slater was also third in the javelin and fourth in the discus, while teammate Olivia Flack took third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase. Gabe Crouch took fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200 for Ridgeview, which was 12th with 12 points, and Gracie Kasberger took fourth in the long jump for Crook County, which was 13th with 11.5 points. Kate Bowen finished fourth in the 3,000 and sixth in the 1,500 for 15th-place Sisters, Catylynn Duff was sixth in the discus and eighth in the shot put for 16th-place Culver, and 21st-place Redmond scored its lone point with Whitney Gieschen’s eighth-place finish in the steeplechase.

In the boys meet, Summit’s Noah Turnbull was second in the discus with a school-record throw of 170-2, and he was runner-up in the shot put. Also taking second for the Storm were Jack Norman in the high jump and Chad Ford in the 800.

Ethan Edwards (pole vault) and Raymond Blasquez (high jump) recorded wins for Bend, and the Lava Bears got third-place finishes by Brady Petz in the 300 hurdles and E.G. Pierce in the 400. Albert Hesse won the 1,500 in a personal-best 4:06 and was first in the 3,000 for Ridgeview. The Ravens’ Trevor McBride was second in the 200 and fourth in the 100, and Micah Cupp took third in both the 100 and the 200.

Luke Schulz won the javelin for Mountain View, which was 10th with 30 points. The Cougars’ Reed Sehorn was fifth in the discus and seventh in the shot put, and James Ravitch took fifth in the pole vault. Victor Ramirez was second in the 100 and fourth in the 400 for Crook County, which was 12th as a team with 24 points, and Noah Chaney was runner-up in the pole vault for the Cowboys.

For Sisters, which was 15th as a team, Jordan Pollard was second in the 1,500 and third in the 3,000, while 17th-place La Pine was led by Chandler George’s third-place finish in the 110 hurdles and fifth-place showing in the 300 hurdles. Chance Greene was fifth in the javelin for Redmond, which was 18th as a team.
