Paralyzed woman sues Eugene taverns — A Eugene woman paralyzed from the waist down after an intoxicated friend’s vehicle crashed into a house has filed a lawsuit against six businesses that she says served alcohol to the driver before the accident. Evelyn Allen, 25, filed the $30 million suit against the taverns last week in Lane County Circuit Court. Allen was riding in a friend’s Ford F350 in November when it slammed into a house in Eugene. She suffered several serious injuries and became a “complete paraplegic,” according to the lawsuit. The driver, Travis Simonis, 29, was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to third-degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants. The lawsuit alleges that Simonis was visibly intoxicated when he was served alcohol the day of the wreck.

Klamath Falls man drowns in Washington river — Authorities say a 24-year-old man drowned while swimming in the Lewis River in northern Clark County in Washington. Authorities on Saturday identified him as Allums Robinson, of Klamath Falls. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office said Robinson was with another swimmer near Cedar Creek on Friday when he had trouble staying above water. The sheriff’s office said he was found later by divers in water that was about 15 feet deep. The other swimmer made it back to shore. The sheriff’s office said the two were part of a group who went to the area together. The man’s cause of death appears to be accidental, the sheriff’s office said, and the cold water is suspected to be a contributing factor.

Mayor gets 16 months for child sex soliciting — A former Southern Oregon mayor has been sentenced to a year and four months in prison for soliciting sex from a police officer on Facebook who he thought was a 14-year-old girl. Kenneth Barrett, 72, also was sentenced Thursday to serve three years of supervision after his release from prison and to register as a sex offender. Barrett was convicted of first- and second-degree online sexual corruption of a child and unlawful possession of a firearm in Douglas County Circuit Court. Barrett resigned as mayor of Winston days after bailing out of jail following his March 2017 arrest. Court documents show Barrett spent two weeks exchanging Facebook messages with a Myrtle Creek police officer impersonating an underage girl.
