Late rally falls short for Lava Bears — A fourth-period charge pulled Bend High into a 12-12 tie, but visiting Southridge scored the go-ahead goal with 25 seconds left to pin a 13-12 defeat on the Lava Bears in a nonconference match Sunday afternoon. Spencer Burgess scored six goals and had an assist for Bend, which trailed 11-7 after three quarters before making it close in the final minutes. Luke Musgrave added three goals for the Bears, who slipped to 5-9 overall.

Ducks roll past Cardinal — Miranda Elish pitched a two-hitter, pinch hitter Shannon Rhodes hit a two-run homer, and No. 4 Oregon defeated Stanford 4-1 on Sunday to sweep the three-game Pac-12 series. The Ducks have now beaten the Cardinal 19 straight games dating back to the 2012 season. Elish (16-1) struck out 10 and walked one as Oregon set the stage for a three-game conference showdown with Washington starting Friday in Seattle. The Huskies came into the weekend atop the Pac-12 standings and ranked No. 1 in the country but then lost three games at No. 3 UCLA and now are in third place at 12-5 behind the league-leading Bruins (15-3) and the second-place Ducks (12-3).
TENNIS
Nadal wins Monte Carlo Masters — Rafael Nadal won a record 31st Masters title after beating Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-2 in the Monte Carlo Masters final on Sunday in Monaco. Nadal also became the first man in the Open era to win the same title 11 times — 13 years after his first title here — and moved one ahead of rival Novak Djokovic for career Masters titles. It gave him a 76th title overall and ensured the Spaniard keeps his top ranking ahead of Roger Federer. Nishikori was chasing a first Masters title, but the Japanese player took 11 minutes to hold for 1-1. He got some brief hope, breaking Nadal with a superb passing shot at full stretch to lead 2-1, but meekly surrendered the next four games. The second set was a procession and Nadal won on his first match point with a stinging backhand winner. Nadal’s celebration was brief and low key. He thrust both hands into the air, and then jogged over to offer Nishikori a sympathetic hug after beating him for the 10th time in 12 meetings. Nishikori saved a set point with a sharp, angled volley at the net. But Nadal was in relentless mood and sealed it on his next chance with a crisp forehand winner. Nishikori is still working his way back to form and full fitness, after missing the 2017 U.S. Open and this year’s Australian Open because of a torn tendon in his right wrist.
MOTOR SPORTS
Grand Prix of Alabama to be completed Monday — The Indy Grand Prix of Alabama has been postponed a day because of heavy rain. IndyCar officials called the race Sunday after a second lengthy rain delay. It will be completed Monday morning with a restart on Lap 23. The race had been scheduled for 90 laps with a two-hour limit because of the heavy rain that contributed to some spinouts. Josef Newgarden is still up front after starting on the pole, followed by Sebastien Bourdais and Ryan Hunter-Reay. Newgarden and Hunter-Reay are both two-time winners at Barber Motorsports Park. Alexander Rossi said at times he could see “absolutely nothing.” He questioned the decision to put up the green flag after the first yellow caution, and “obviously the results of that was a car hydroplaning.”
FOOTBALL
Ex-Michigan player sorry for Harbaugh messages — Former Michigan football player Elysee Mbem-Bosse posted a message on Twitter on Sunday explaining his side of the story over the threatening social media messages that tagged head coach Jim Harbaugh. But he also wrote that the situation, which has been under investigation by the University of Michigan police, “has been very hard on me mentally, physically, and emotionally.” He wrote Sunday: “I take full responsibility for tweets i made regarding the safety of Coach Harbaugh which i apologize fully for but being harassed by the university police and being told I’m mentally ill without proper evaluation is against my civil rights.” Mbem-Bosse wrote, in part, that he was released by the football team in November “with no explanation why with no timetable for return.” Tweets from his account earlier in the week included: “Michigan is open carry. Let’s not forget that. Not your friend” and “They sent someone to my crib before. I was nice enough to call the cops next time I’m calling the morgue. I’m talking with facts.”
