Area hoopers named all-state — Mountain View senior Matt Van Tassell has been voted to the Class 5A boys basketball all-state first team, highlighting a list of six Central Oregon boys and girls players who were named all-state for the 2017-18 season. Cougars junior Chase McClain was selected to the 5A boys second team, and Sisters senior Ty Horner received 4A honorable mention. For the girls, Madras senior Lynden Harry was voted to the 4A first team, Bend High senior Cambree Scott was named to the 5A second team, and Redmond High junior Ava Kitchin received 5A honorable mention. Thurston’s Blaine Liberatore and Seaside’s Bill Westerholm were chosen as the 5A and 4A boys coaches of the year, respectively, while Terry Harrison of 5A Marist and Bruce Bryant of 4A Marshfield were selected as the girls coaches of the year. Players of the year have yet to be announced.

Mountain View’s Hood receives OADA honor — Dave Hood, athletic director at Bend’s Mountain View High School for the past 16 years, has been named the state’s athletic director of the year by the Oregon Athletic Directors Association. According to the association’s announcement of the honor, Hood was selected for making significant contributions to Mountain View, the Intermountain Conference, the community and the OADA, which represents Class 6A, 5A and 4A districts.

Redmond hires new volleyball coach — Aaron Mallory, formerly the head coach at La Pine High, has been named the volleyball coach at Redmond High. Formerly an assistant at Bend’s Pilot Butte Middle School as well as at Culver, Summit and Redmond high schools, Mallory was La Pine’s coach from 2010 to 2012. He takes over for Kellie Scholl, who coached the team the past two seasons. Last fall, the Panthers were 2-16 overall and 0-8 in Intermountain Conference play.
