Heading into the boys golf season, Summit coach Andy Heinly spoke highly about his team’s ability to score low, about the Storm’s depth, and how any of his top players could finish atop the leaderboard.

Tuesday was Heinly’s praise becoming reality.

All five of Summit’s players placed in the top five at the MVHS Awbrey Glen Invite, helping the Storm post a 299 as a team and win the tournament by a comfortable 39 strokes. Ridgeview was second with a 338, followed by Bend with a 361, Crook County with a 367 and host Mountain View with a 369.

“The guys are moving in the right direction,” Heinly said of the Storm. “They all know what our goal is, and we did set a goal (Tuesday) to break 300. It’s a solid group.”

In warm, ideal spring weather at Bend’s Awbrey Glen Golf Club, all five Summit players finished with two birdies or more. Luke Simoneau led the way for Summit, tying Ridgeview’s Isaac Buerger for medalist honors with an even-par 72. The Storm’s William Fleck was third with a 73, and Jackson Murphy, Hayden Klein and Andy Tennant all tied for fourth with matching scores of 77.

“What’s so cool about it is none of them are very satisfied,” Heinly said. “Every one of those guys can be 75 or below.”

Luke Reynolds tied for ninth place with an 86 for the Ravens, while Bend was led by Tyler Floyd, who was seventh with an 82, and Jack McCleary, who tied for 10th with an 88. Mountain View’s Cole Rupert was eighth with an 84, and the Cougars’ Dante Vasquez and Redmond’s Emmett Hagen tied for 10th at 88.
