Suicidal man shot in Beaverton — Authorities say police shot an armed man who made suicidal statements and shot at officers during a standoff in Beaverton. Beaverton Police Department spokesman Jeremy Shaw said officers responded to the man, who was inside a vehicle, Wednesday morning. Shaw said officers, including those from a crisis team, communicated with the man for more than two hours through text messages. He said the man was making suicidal statements and didn’t really want to talk to authorities. Shaw said the man fired at officers at around 1:45 p.m., and “an officer-involved shooting” followed. Shaw said the man was injured, treated on the scene and taken to a hospital. A major crimes team is investigating.

Police officer resigns — A Salem police officer has resigned after he was charged with DUII and other crimes in a February incident in which he allegedly sideswiped a parked car. Omar DeMarco, 39, resigned March 12 from the Salem Police Department. A Polk County Sheriff’s Office citation shows DeMarco was involved in the crash at 2:42 a.m. Feb. 17 in West Salem. Charges including the DUII as well as criminal mischief and hit-and-run were filed against DeMarco on April 6.

Portland Schools cuts 65 jobs — Some 65 positions at the headquarters of Oregon’s largest school district have been slashed in a major reorganization. According to records obtained by The Oregonian, 31 people were laid off and 30 vacant jobs were eliminated. Four additional employees resigned, retired or transferred within the district. Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero announced the cuts Monday. Communications, information technology and operations took significant hits. The senior director of equity and partnerships, the deputy human resources officer position and the senior directors of curriculum and instruction and teaching and learning were also eliminated.
