Music fans probably know the drill by now when it comes to modern string bands playing music that is almost — but not quite — bluegrass. Mipso, formed in the early 2010s by three students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is one of the latest bands to take up the trappings of newgrass and apply its own spin to decades of American music history. With this year’s “Edges Run,” the now-quartet’s fifth album, Mipso separates from the pack with an introspective, at times dark set of songs that emphasize atmosphere over monolithic strumming and draw from folk, old-school country and modern pop with equal enthusiasm. It’s the sound of a band embracing adulthood and finding its sound. Last in Central Oregon for the 2016 Sisters Folk Festival, Mipso returns to play the Domino Room on Wednesday.
Mipso: 8 p.m. Wednesday, doors open at 7:30 p.m.; $10 plus fees in advance, $15 at the door; Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend; midtownballroom.com or 541-408-4329.
