Inmate arrested after ditching work crew — Authorities say an inmate was arrested after walking away from a Multnomah County work crew in downtown Portland. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said Joshua Sean Purdue was arrested Sunday morning without incident and taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center on a probation violation. Additional charges may be filed once the investigation into his escape from custody is complete. Authorities said Purdue left the crew Saturday afternoon. The sheriff’s office said Purdue was serving a 90-day sentence for a burglary conviction and was set to be released in early July.
Mega-dairy files for bankruptcy — Oregon’s newest large dairy has filed for bankruptcy a day before thousands of its cattle were set to be sold to repay a major creditor. Lost Valley Farm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late Thursday. The auction set for Friday was called off. This month, an Oregon judge ordered the dairy farm owner, Greg te Velde, to cooperate with an auction. The creditor, Rabobank, sued seeking to foreclose on the dairy’s assets, which serve as collateral for $60 million in defaulted loans. Lost Valley Farm began operating last year, over the objection of environmentalists who feared the big dairy would be a polluter. The state earlier this year accused the dairy of endangering drinking water by mismanaging manure and wastewater. The sides reached a settlement in March, allowing the dairy to continue operations in a limited capacity. Thursday’s bankruptcy petition filed in California stays all foreclosure actions by creditors including the auction. Te Velde also has operations in California.
Woman convicted of killing boyfriend — A Lane County jury has convicted a 35-year-old woman of murder for fatally shooting her boyfriend at Alton Baker Park in Eugene. Lacy Lyons will be sentenced Tuesday in Lane County Circuit Court. The jury also convicted her of second-degree assault. Joshua Turnage was found dead Jan. 14, 2017 in the back seat of a Ford Explorer. She was arrested hours later. The couple had been camping in the SUV at the park. Defense attorney David Saydack told jurors when the trial opened that Lyons shot and killed Turnage after enduring months of threats from him. Lane County Assistant District Attorney Katherine Green said at trial that evidence shows Lyons was not acting in self-defense when she shot Turnage in the back. She said Lyons walked away and later called 911 from a downtown coffee shop to report the shooting. Both attorneys declined comment Friday after the verdict was returned.
