BASEBALL

Freshman lifts OSU past ASU — Making just his fourth start at Oregon State, freshman catcher Troy Claunch helped No. 5 Oregon State beat Arizona State 6-5 on Sunday in the finale of a three-game Pac-12 series at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Claunch hit a solo home run, the first homer of his career, in the second inning. In the seventh, after Michael Gretler’s RBI single tied the score 5-5, Claunch’s sacrifice fly produced what proved to be the winning run. The win was the eighth in nine games for the Beavers (12-6 Pac-12, 32-7 overall) and their second in the series against the Sun Devils (10-11, 18-25). Cadyn Grenier hit a two-run homer in the first inning for OSU, and Gretler and Steven Kwan had three hits each. Jake Mulholland, the last of three Beavers pitchers, worked a perfect 11⁄3 innings to earn his 12th save. OSU plays a nonconference game against Oregon in Eugene on Tuesday night.

Oregon beats USC in 10 innings — Ray Soderman’s one-out double brought Daniel Patzlaff home with the winning run in the 10th inning Sunday as Oregon made it two straight over USC with a 2-1 Pac-12 victory at PK Park in Eugene. Spencer Steer’s sacrifice fly gave the Ducks (8-13 Pac-12, 21-20 overall) a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and UO pitchers protected that lead until Matthew Acosta delivered a two-out RBI single in the ninth to tie the game for the Trojans (7-14, 19-21). Patzlaff was hit by a pitch to open the Oregon half of the 10th and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Taylor Travess, setting the stage for Soderman’s decisive hit. The Ducks entertain Oregon State in a nonconference game Tuesday night.

SOFTBALL

Ducks finish sweep of Huskies — No. 2 Oregon scored five runs in the third inning and went on to a 5-3 victory over No. 4 Washington on Sunday, capping a three-game Pac-12 series sweep in Seattle. With the win, the Ducks (15-3 Pac-12, 41-7 overall) moved into a tie for the conference lead with No. 1-ranked UCLA. Jenna Lilley’s two-run double was followed by D.J. Sanders’ two-run homer in the Ducks’ big third inning, which included Gwen Svekis scoring Oregon’s fifth run on a passed ball. Ducks pitcher Megan Kleist allowed a season-high 10 hits to the Huskies (12-8, 41-8) but earned the victory to improve to 17-5. Miranda Elish came on in the seventh inning to pick up her second save. Lauren Lindvall and Haley Cruse had two hits apiece for the Ducks, who return to Eugene for their final home series of the regular season, a three-game set with Utah starting Friday night.

Beavers broomed out of Tucson — Ivy Davis’ grand slam put Arizona up by eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, ending a 9-1 run-rule victory for the Wildcats over Oregon State on Sunday. Arizona swept the three-game Pac-12 series, while the Beavers saw their losing streak reach five games. Hope Brandner’s solo home run in the fourth inning drew OSU within 2-1, but that was as close as the visitors would get against the No. 10-ranked Wildcats (11-10 Pac-12, 35-13 overall). Michelle Sass had two of just five hits for the Beavers (7-11, 26-22), who play a nonconference game Tuesday against Seattle at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis.

TENNIS

Nadal wins 11th Barcelona title — Rafael Nadal continues to make winning on clay look all too easy. Nadal extended his dominance on the surface with a 6-2, 6-1 win over 19-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday to win his 11th Barcelona Open title. Nadal, who also won his 11th Monte Carlos Masters title last week, was never seriously challenged on his way to a 19th straight victory on clay. The top-ranked Spaniard has won 46 straight sets on clay, extending his own record. He has not lost on clay since facing Dominic Thiem in Rome last year. It was the 77th title overall for Nadal, tying him with John McEnroe for fourth best in the Open Era. Only Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl are ahead. Nadal, who won his 400th match on clay in Saturday’s semifinal, needed the victory in Barcelona to secure his No. 1 ranking.

SOCCER

Los Angeles FC opens stadium with win over Sounders — Laurent Ciman scored on a free kick in the third minute of stoppage time, and Los Angeles FC opened its $350 million Banc of California Stadium with a stunning 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday night in Los Angeles. Tyler Miller made three saves to earn the shutout for LAFC, but the Major League Soccer expansion team seemed headed to its first scoreless draw in the first home game in franchise history before its Belgian captain lined up a free kick in the final minute of play. Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei crouched to make the save after Ciman’s kick cleared the wall, but Frei simply could not hang on.
