Gilchrist 2nd out of 14 teams at home meet

GILCHRIST — Just 12 points separated first from third place in the girls standings at the Gilchrist Small School Invitational track and field meet Saturday, and with Skyla Newton winning four events, Gilchrist recorded 91.5 points to take second at the 14-team meet.
Newton was first in the 100-meter dash, the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and the long jump for the Grizzlies, who lost only to Hosanna Christian, which totaled 96 points. Culver was third with 84 points.

The Culver boys, headlined by Kash Michael’s win in the high jump, were second with 79 points as Triangle Lake claimed the victory with 102 points.
Also for the Gilchrist girls, Katie McDaniel was second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles, and Rayenee Hoover placed fourth in the triple jump and tied for fifth in the high jump. Catylynn Duff (shot put, discus) and Emma Knepp (1,500, 3,000) each won two events for Culver, and Irma Retano was runner-up in both the 800 and the 1,500. Lizzy Jones took second in the discus for La Pine, which was eighth as a team with 33 points.
Hunter Keiski and Jordan VanAlstyne went 2-3 in the boys pole vault for Culver, Johan Jaimes was third in both the 300 hurdles and the high jump, and Cesar Orozco took third in the 100.
For Gilchrist, which was eighth as a team with 35 points, Cody Metzler won the javelin with a personal-record throw of 138 feet, 10 inches, and Keny Spurlock was first in the shot put with a PR 43-2. Jesse Ordonez was third in the 3,000 for La Pine, which tied for 11th as a team with 23 points.

Mountain View 14, Hillsboro 9: HILLSBORO — The Cougars (7-3) claimed their fifth win in seven games with a nonconference victory.
Glencoe 15, Summit 9: HILLSBORO — Justin Radatti had three goals and an assist, but the Storm fell in nonconference play. Max Asevedo had two goals and an assist for Summit (2-11), Jason Ward had two goals, Grant McLuskie scored once, and Will Maskill had 13 saves in goal.
Ridgeview 16, North Eugene 5: EUGENE — Brantley Biondi had five goals and an assist, and the Ravens won in a nonconference matchup for their third victory in four games. Danny McGinty had four goals for Ridgeview (8-5), and Mike Ashley and Jacob Matheson each added two goals and an assist. The Ravens’ Steen Braun had one goal, two assists and won 17 of 18 faceoffs.
Boys tennis
Storm second at tourney: MCMINNVILLE — Ryan Abbott and David Feldman went 2-0, and Summit defeated Beaverton 5-3 after falling to McMinnville 6-2 to take second at the Grizzly Invitational. Matthew Merzbach and Will Parlan recorded singles victories against McMinnville, and the Storm booked three other doubles wins against Beaverton: Dylan Warren and Josua Marine, Ethan Koester and Cole Capatani, and Will DenOuden and Noah Schottenfer. McMinnville claimed the tournament championship, and Beaverton was third.
Ridgeview, Redmond qualify for state: ASHLAND — On the first day of the Midwestern League championships, the Panthers and the Ravens qualified a singles player and a doubles team, respectively, for the Class 5A state championships. Redmond’s Benny Saito won 6-0, 6-0 in the second round of the singles bracket and 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals, while Ridgeview’s Tim Schneider and John Wright won 6-1, 6-2 and 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to move into the semis. The top four singles players and doubles teams qualify for the state meet May 17-19.
Girls tennis
Ravens advance to semis: ROSEBURG — With Sierra Cassaro winning two singles matches and the tandem of Marie Carr and Megan Alldredge posting three doubles wins, Ridgeview finished the first day of the Midwestern League championships in third place with 22 points. The top four singles players and doubles teams qualify for the Class 5A state meet May 17-19. Ingrid Harris advanced to the singles quarterfinals before falling to Marist’s Ellie Gonyea, as the Panthers totaled 18 points to sit fourth in the eight-team standings. Also for the Panthers, the doubles teams of Ashley Green and Selah Smith, and Melody Acevedo and Jhoana Nunez each fell in the quarters, as did Ridgeview’s Kate Row in the singles bracket.
Baseball
Sherman 6-12, Culver 0-5: CULVER — The Bulldogs (6-3 SD6, 10-7 overall) were swept in Class 2A/1A Special District 6 play.
