Equestrian
Buck Brannaman to lead clinic — Noted horse trainer Buck Brannaman will lead two three-day horsemanship clinics July 6-8 at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond. Participants will ride their own horses, and both courses cost $700. Spectators are welcome for $30 per day, and kids under 12 and seniors 65 and older are admitted free. The Horsemanship 1 clinic will run from 9 a.m. to noon each day and will focus on green horses progressing into the bridle. The Horsemanship 2 course will meet from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and focus on introducing the bridle horse and rider to working cattle and ranch roping. Gymnastics
Bend gymnast 18th in nationals all-around — Blaine Davis of Bend finished 18th among 18-year-olds in the all-around at the Men’s Junior Olympic Nationals, held Saturday and Sunday in Oklahoma City. Davis scored a combined total of 147.850, tallying 72.550 in the prelims and 75.300 in the finals. Davis trains at Metro Gymnastics Center in Tigard, and the national competition was his final Junior Olympic event. Another Bend teen, Lauren Hicks, tied for 51st place with 35.700 points in the Junior D all-around category at the Women’s Junior Olympic Nationals, which were held Saturday and Sunday in Cincinnati. Hicks trains at Oregon Olympic Athletics in Bend.
Running
Mendoza top American at trail worlds — Mario Mendoza, 32 and of Bend, finished sixth in the Penyagolosa Trails 85K race, which began in Castellón de la Plana, Spain, and doubled as the 2018 Trail World Championships. Mendoza finished the race in 9 hours, 31 seconds, and was the first American to finish. Spain’s Luis Alberto Hernando won his third straight trail title in 8:38:35, and Cristofer Clemente, also of Spain, was second at 8:46:19. Mendoza was also the top American performer in 2017, when he finished ninth.
Rugby
Blues win in 1st round of playoffs — The Bend Blues beat Linn Benton, 63-19, Saturday Delta Park in Portland in the Rugby Oregon High School Boys Club Championship bowl semifinal. Haakon Kjellesvik had four tries and four conversions, and Riley Toman scored three tries. Tanner Doyle scored two tries and Noah Michelson, Tyson Pettigrew and Maxwell Rastovich scored one try each. The Blues, who improved to 4-4 with the win, will play the Salem Lost Boys at Western Oregon University in Monmouth on Saturday for fifth place in state.
Pole Pedal Paddle
PPP registration closes Monday night — Registration for the 2018 Pole Pedal Paddle closes at midnight Monday. Entry for the six-leg relay race varies from $50 per person for children’s teams to $210 for a full family team. To sign up, visit www.pppbend.com.
Triathlon
Bend’s Brown 2nd at world paratriathlon event — Jamie Brown, 38, finished second in the PTS4 Men category at the ITU World Paratriathlon Series opener in Yokohama, Japan, on Saturday. Brown finished the 750-meter swim, 20K bike and 5K run in 1 hour, 1 minute and 41 seconds, just under a minute behind Alexis Hanquinquart of France. |He was one of eight American athletes to medal at the event. The next race in the world paratriathlon series will be held in Edmonton, Canada, on July 27.
