Jake Hatch and James Lewis both had four goals and three assists, leading host Mountain View to a 14-8 win over Century on Monday night in the first round of the Oregon High School Lacrosse Association’s Cascade Cup.

According to coach Dan Marut, the No. 5-seeded Cougars started slowly against the No. 12 Jaguars from Hillsboro.

“Both teams were feeling each other out,” said Marut. “Then we found our groove.”

And with their fourth straight win, the Cougars found their way to the quarterfinal round of the 16-team tournament. They will play Thursday in Keizer (game time to be determined) against No. 4 seed McNary, a 12-11 winner against Aloha in another first-round contest Monday.

Jimmy Arnold scored three goals for the Cougars (10-3), and Jake Domings, Luke Roberts and Ethan Mawdsley scored one goal apiece. Roberts had seven ground balls for the winners, as did both Wyatt Hebrard and Levi Messinger.

“These guys are fearless competitors,” Marut said of his squad, the last Central Oregon lacrosse team still standing this season. “But most of all,” he added, “they all love to have fun. They’re such a pleasure to coach. They make my job easy.”
