Nellie McKay sings standards at Volcanic

British-American singer, pianist, writer and actress Nellie McKay isn’t your typical chanteuse. Growing up in Harlem and studying jazz voice at the Manhattan School of Music, McKay developed an uncompromising aesthetic that has guided her career from her 2004 Columbia Records debut album, “Get Away From Me,” a double album that finds room for heartfelt jazz balladry, humorous political commentary, modern pop and hip-hop. Her subsequent original albums, which have explored disco, funk and rock, have been interspersed with cover records celebrating her influences (2009’s “Normal as Blueberry Pie — A Tribute to Doris Day” and 2015’s ’60s pop set, “My Weekly Reader”). This year, she returned with “Sister Orchid,” an intimate set featuring a lone McKay on vocals, piano and keyboards tackling standards such as “The Nearness of You” and “Georgia on My Mind.” Catch her supporting the album at Volcanic Theatre Pub on Wednesday.

Nellie McKay: 8 p.m. Wednesday; $15 plus fees in advance, $18 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; volcanictheatre.com or 541-323-1881.
