2018 Bend Elks preview: West Coast League around the horn

Teams listed in order of 2017 finish (records in parentheses)

North Division

Bellingham Bells (31-23): Ernie Yake returns for the Bells after receiving all-WCL second-team honors last season. This spring the Gonzaga infielder batted a team-high .321 with 11 doubles and 20 RBIs. Mississippi State outfielder Elijah MacNamee hit .314 with 10 doubles and 19 RBIs this season, and Stanford left-hander Austin Weiermiller went 5-1 with a 2.87 ERA in 21 games, including 19 relief appearances.

Wenatchee AppleSox (29-25): A perennial contender in the WCL playoffs, the AppleSox reload with a couple of small-school sluggers. Yakima Valley College outfielder Johnny Sage comes to Wenatchee after batting .399 with a Northwest Athletic Conference-leading 67 RBIs en route to being named the NWAC East Region MVP. Alex Garcia, bound for Oklahoma State, hit .368 with six homers and a team-high 66 RBIs for Central Arizona College this spring.

Victoria HarbourCats (29-25): Last season the HarbourCats advanced to their first WCL championship series but fell in three games to Corvallis. Victoria boasts catchers Hayden Jaco, who batted .333 with Indiana State this spring, and Kekai Rios, who hit .284 at Hawaii. Cal Baptist infielder Nick Plaia also provides some stability after batting .333 this season.

Kelowna Falcons (28-26): A pair of Missouri Western State players look to guide Kelowna to the WCL championship series three years after the franchise fell to the Elks in the 2015 final. Infielder Brooks Day batted .301 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs this spring, and left-hander Kellan Richards recorded a 3.73 ERA in a team-high 35 appearances.

Yakima Valley Pippins (28-26): After taking second in the South Division in 2017, the Pippins move to the North this season. The lineup is stacked with consistency and includes Dixie State infielder Tyler Hollow, who batted .350 this spring, Montana State Billings catcher Andrew Schleusner, who hit .325 with four homers and 38 RBIs, and UC Irvine infielder Brendan Brooks, who batted .319 with 23 RBIs.

Port Angeles Lefties (19-34): Back for his and the Lefties’ second season is Jacob Portaro, who hit .238 with three home runs in 40 games last summer. The Biola infielder batted .295 with 14 doubles, seven homers and 35 RBIs this spring. Tulane infielder David Bedgood joins the lineup after hitting .242 with eight doubles and 20 RBIs this season.

South Division

Corvallis Knights (34-20): Long the class of the WCL, Corvallis has advanced to the finals nine times in the past 11 years and has claimed three championships in the last five seasons. The Knights feature University of Portland right-hander Connor Knutson, who went 4-2 with a 2.75 ERA this season, and Stanford righty Brendan Beck, who was 6-0 with a 2.48 ERA while holding opponents to a .232 batting average.

Cowlitz Black Bears (27-27): The Black Bears loaded their lineup with consistent yet powerful hitters this season. Ryan Kim, an outfielder at the University of Portland this season, batted .268 with 10 doubles and 17 RBIs after garnering all-WCL second-team honors last summer. Behind the plate is Lewis-Clark State catcher Cory Voss, who hit .345 with team highs in home runs (10) and RBIs (54) this spring.

Bend Elks (26-28): For a third straight season, Collin Runge will play for the Elks. The 2015 Ridgeview High graduate batted .191 with three doubles and 13 RBIs in 40 games for the University of Portland this spring. Last summer, Runge was a second-team all-WCL selection after hitting .315 with three homers and 17 RBIs. Infielder Trevor Snyder batted .337 with 18 home runs and 69 RBIs for Morehead State this spring, and roaming the outfield is Creighton’s Clark Brinkman, who hit .317 with 13 doubles and 24 stolen bases.

Walla Walla Sweets (25-29): After taking fifth in the North Division last year, the Sweets move to the South for 2018. Northwest Nazarene outfielder Zach Penrod highlights the Sweets’ lineup after batting a team-high .369 this season with five home runs and 34 RBIs. Also for Walla Walla, Gonzaga infielder Nick Nyquist, a first-team all-WCL pick last summer, returns after batting .250 for the Bulldogs this spring.

Portland Pickles: The Pickles come to the WCL after going 31-29 and placing fourth in the Great West League last summer and being eliminated in the first round of the GWL playoffs. The Pickles feature Saint Mary’s infielder Gio Diaz, who batted .319 with seven doubles and 16 RBIs this season, and Pepperdine outfielder Cory Wills, who hit .291 with five home runs and 24 RBIs this spring.
