Water advisory lifted — Officials in Salem have lifted a drinking water advisory after tests determined the water is safe. City officials lifted the advisory Saturday after tests on samples collected Wednesday and Thursday found toxin levels below advisory levels. Officials had announced the advisory Tuesday due to an algae bloom in Detroit Lake, a municipal reservoir, that contaminated tap water in the area.
Wood plant will be rebuilt — The owner of a Western Oregon wood-products plant that was destroyed by a fire says he will rebuild the business. Walter Whitsell of Whitsell Manufacturing intends to get the business up and going again. The fire May 27 destroyed the 190,000-square-foot plant in Saginaw in 30 minutes. Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire that started at about 7:30 p.m. when no employees were at the plant. Whitsell Manufacturing purchases lumber from sawmills and turns it into various lumber products for sale. Another business called Woodguard was also in the plant. Whitsell says the two businesses employed about 100 workers.
30 years for killing girlfriend — A St. Helens man who killed his girlfriend has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. Jeremy Milutin, 38, received the sentence Friday in Lane County Circuit Court. Milutin pleaded guilty last month to first-degree manslaughter in the August 2016 death of 35-year-old Cheryl Elizabeth Hart. She lived in St. Helens but was killed in Eugene. Her remains were found in a wooded area of Klamath County about a month after she was reported missing.
Accused abuser committed — A homeless 21-year-old man accused of offering a 13-year-old runaway girl a place to stay in his tent and sexually abusing her has been committed to the Oregon State Hospital. A Multnomah County circuit judge last week dismissed the criminal case against Ahmed Hadir Ahmed and instead committed him to the hospital for at least two years. Authorities say the girl met Ahmed in April 2017 at Powell Park in Portland. The girl told police Ahmed offered her a place to sleep in his tent, offered her money and gave her methamphetamine. Authorities say Ahmed abused the girl over three days. She eventually called police. Ahmed could remain at the hospital indefinitely.
