CORVALLIS — Oregon State’s highly anticipated rematch with LSU bore a great resemblance to last year’s College World Series drubbing.
The top-seeded Beavers roughed up Zack Hess early and often on a pleasant Saturday night, bludgeoning their way to a 14-1 Corvallis Regional victory over No. 2 LSU in front of 4,009 fans at Goss Stadium, an all-time record.
In the second game of the 2017 CWS, OSU handed the Tigers a 13-1 defeat before the SEC powerhouse regrouped to win the final two meetings. The back-to-back losses knocked the Beavers out of Omaha.
On a night when ace Luke Heimlich was not his usual self, OSU cranked out 15 hits while scoring the most runs in a postseason game since a 15-0 shutout of Stanford in 2006.
Heimlich walked four and plunked two in seven innings. The two-time Pac-12 pitcher of the year still gave up just one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
