Arrests at violent Portland protests — Portland Police say at least four people were arrested during demonstrations near City Hall. The dueling protests involved antifascists known as antifa and right-wing groups. Some reports showed demonstrators punching and assaulting members of the opposing side on Sunday afternoon. A police spokesman says some people were treated for injuries but no one needed to be taken to the hospital. The dueling protests got underway Sunday peacefully at first. Then there was shoving, a small bonfire was lit and punches were thrown. Police used pepper spray to quell the crowds as Patriot Prayer supporters started marching. Two of those arrested were facing disorderly conduct charges. One other was charged with failure to comply with an order.

Solar approval appeal — An Oregon appeals court has agreed with the state Land Use Board of Appeals that Jackson County improperly approved a large solar farm planned for prime agricultural land outside Medford. Jackson County commissioners last year approved the project proposing nearly 40,000 solar panels on 80 acres of prime farmland. The group 1000 Friends of Oregon appealed to the land board. That board said the project by Florida-based Origis Energy didn’t qualify for an exception to Oregon’s land use goal of preserving farmland because it’s not dependent on a “unique resource.”

Chef instructor killed — Portland Police have identified the man who was shot and killed Saturday inside the Oregon Culinary Institute as Daniel Brophy, 63, of Beaverton. The institute’s website lists Brophy as a lead chef instructor who had been at the school since 2006. It says he has nearly three decades of experience in the kitchen and also was an expert in marine biology and gardening. Police say students and staff arriving for courses Saturday morning found Brophy injured inside the school and called for help. Police have not identified a suspect.
