A lawsuit filed last week in Jefferson County Circuit Court alleges the owner and the manager of the Sandbagger Saloon and Dinner House in Crooked River Ranch took part in a group beating of a customer on New Year’s Day.
Jefferson County resident Steven Bray asserts in an amended complaint filed Wednesday in Deschutes County Circuit Court that Sandbagger owner Scott Satterlee and two others “beat and kicked” him after he was knocked unconscious attempting to separate two feuding women in the restaurant.
Bray claims he suffered a concussion in the attack, as well as a chipped tooth, fractured rib, severe lower lip cut, damaged throat — from blunt force trauma — radiating neck pain, persistent tinnitus and contusions to the scalp and face.
He is seeking $530,000 in damages for claims of negligence and battery.
The suit states that on Jan. 1, Bray was a customer and “invitee” at the restaurant. Bray attempted to separate two women arguing about unpermitted smoking and vaping in the building by standing between them. Satterlee at that point yelled at Bray, saying it was “his bar and he could do whatever he wanted, including smoking and vaping,” according to the lawsuit.
Someone hit Bray in the head, knocking him unconscious, the lawsuit claims. The lawsuit states that assailant could be Jefferson County resident and listed codefendant Mike Wilson.
As Bray lay on the floor, Satterlee and Sandbagger manager Shawn Cranston “kicked and beat” him, according to the suit.
Reached Friday, Satterlee said he hadn’t seen the suit and couldn’t comment.
The 12,000-acre Crooked River Ranch is a residential subdivision located about seven miles west of Terrebonne. The restaurant has been there since the former cattle ranch was rezoned rural-residential in the late 1980s.
Satterlee and his father, Paul, purchased the Sandbagger in 2003.
