History

THIS DATE IN BASEBALL

———

June 11

1938 — Johnny Vander Meer hurled the first of two consecutive no-hitters as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Boston Braves 3-0.

1985 — Von Hayes became the first player in major league history to hit two home runs in the first inning. Hayes connected twice in a nine-run first, powering the Philadelphia Phillies to a 26-7 victory over the New York Mets.

1990 — Nolan Ryan pitched the sixth no-hitter of his career, extending his major league record, as the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics 5-0. Ryan was the first to pitch no-hitters for three teams and, at 43, the oldest to throw one.

1995 — Lee Smith set a major league record with a save in his 16th consecutive appearance, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the California Angels’ 5-4 victory over Baltimore. Smith broke the mark of 15 straight set by Doug Jones in 1988.

2003 — Houston’s Roy Oswalt, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner combined for the first no-hitter against the New York Yankees in 45 years, winning 8-0. The sextet set a record for the highest number of pitchers to throw a no-hitter in major league history — four accomplished the feat twice.

American League

Mariners 5, Rays 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Right fielder Mitch Haniger threw out Johnny Field at the plate to end the game, and Seattle won for the 17th time in 22 games. Waved home, Field tried to score from first on a two-out, bloop single by Carlos Gomez. Haniger rushed in and made a sliding try, scrambled to retrieve the ball and then unleashed a one-hop throw home that beat Field by a wide margin.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Matt Chapman homered leading off the eighth, moments after a defensive gem by shortstop Marcus Semien’s defensive gem, as Oakland held off Kansas City. Whit Merrifield doubled off A’s starter Sean Manaea in the eighth and advanced to third on Mike Moustakas’ groundout. Treinen replaced Manaea and got Salvador Perez to hit a grounder to shortstop. Semien made a diving stop then threw to home while still on his knees to nail a siding Merrifield at the plate.

WASHINGTON — Brandon Crawford went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer, and San Francisco dealt Max Scherzer his first loss in more than two months. After Pablo Sandoval walked leading off the fourth, Crawford homered into the second deck in right for his eighth of the season. He singled in the first and doubled in the sixth and eighth innings. Since May 1, Crawford is hitting an MLB-best .439 (58-for-132) and has raised his average to .338.

Mets 2, Yankees 0

NEW YORK — Seth Lugo struck out eight in six shutout innings in a stellar spot start and Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer off Luis Severino as the Mets snapped an eight-game skid. Frazier went deep for the second consecutive night to help the Mets prevent a Subway Series sweep at Citi Field. They ended a 10-game home losing streak and avoided an 0-9 homestand that would have matched the worst in team history.
