Roger K. Stenger, formerly of Bend, passed away April 15, 2018, in Wheeler. He was 72.

A Committal Service with full military honors will take place Saturday, June 16, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at Deschutes Memorial Gardens, located at 63875 N. Hwy 97 in Bend, Oregon.

Roger was born September 19, 1945, in Monitor, to Kenneth and Wilma (Medack) Stenger. He spent his younger days living on a berry farm, until moving to Redmond with his family in 1959.

Roger attended Redmond High School, where he was a double letterman in football and wrestling. After graduating high school in 1963, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany from June 1963 to May 1966. Upon being released from active duty, Roger served in the National Guard and later, the Air National Guard.

In 1973, Roger took a special trip to Seoul, Korea; it was here that he met his wife, Kum Soon. They returned to Oregon and in June of 1974, they were married. They welcomed a son, Travis, in 1978.

While a guardsman, Roger worked at Brightwood Mill in Redmond and attended Central Oregon Community College, where he earned several associate degrees. He retired from the National Guard in 1993 and from the mill in 2003, and then moved to the Oregon Coast with his friend of many years.

In 2010, he was able to travel to Jerusalem, fulfilling one of his lifelong dreams. Roger enjoyed gardening, playing card games and wood working projects. He also donated his time volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels, in which he received many awards for his dedicated service.

Roger is survived by his son, Travis Stenger of Olympia, WA; mother, Wilma Stenger of Redmond; and his sister, Judy (husband, Roy) Chase of Ocean Park, WA. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Stenger.
