Man involved in accident bailed out of jail — A 22-year-old man charged with being intoxicated and causing a crash that killed former University of Oregon football player Fotu Leiato has been released from jail. Court officials said Pedro Chavarin Jr. left the Lane County Jail on Friday, after a judge reduced his bail from $250,000 to $100,000. Conditions of Chavarin’s release were not made available by court or jail officials. Prosecutors have charged Chavarin with intoxicated driving, reckless driving and second-degree manslaughter in connection with a June 15 crash in Eugene. Authorities allege that Chavarin, who had been attending the UO before the wreck, was intoxicated when he rolled his car. He allegedly told police that he had no passengers with him. A pedestrian later found Leiato’s body near the crash scene. Leaito was 21. He had been dismissed from the football team in April after an arrest in a misdemeanor case.

3-game suspension looms for Bucs QB Winston — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will open the upcoming season without the face of their franchise, as quarterback Jameis Winston will be suspended three games by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Winston, 24, was accused of groping a female Uber driver in Arizona in March 2016, something he had denied since the allegations surfaced in November. An eight-month investigation by the league resulted in the suspension, which could be extended if he doesn’t complete undisclosed requirements. While there is a general understanding of the NFL’s decision, the league had not officially notified Winston, his representatives or the Bucs as of Thursday evening. It could be formally announced as early as this morning. While suspended, Winston must stay away from all team activities. He will be allowed to participate in training camp and all four preseason games. No criminal or civil complaint was pursued by the Uber driver, who has remained anonymous but said she was inspired to come forward by the #MeToo movement.

Mauresmo will be first woman to captain Davis Cup — Former top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo will become the first woman to captain France’s Davis Cup men’s team when she replaces Yannick Noah next season. “I’m obviously very proud of the trust put in me,” said Mauresmo, who has also coached Andy Murray. The 38-year-old Frenchwoman is a two-time Grand Slam champion. She stepped down as France’s Fed Cup women’s team captain after the 2016 season when she announced she was expecting her second child. Mauresmo was appointed on a two-season contract, the French federation said Saturday. Noah is currently in charge of both France’s Fed Cup and Davis Cup teams. Julien Benneteau will succeed the 1983 French Open champion as Fed Cup captain at the end of the season.

Djokovic reaches first final in almost a year — Novak Djokovic advanced to his first ATP tour final in almost a year by defeating Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (5), 6-4 at Queen’s Club on Saturday. The 12-time Grand Slam champion’s last final — and title — also came on a British grass court, when he defeated Gael Monfils in Eastbourne last July. Djokovic will face Marin Cilic in Sunday’s final after the top-seeded Croat defeated Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4). In-form Chardy had won 12 of his previous 13 matches but the Frenchman was still left without a win — or even a set — against Djokovic after their 11th career meeting. Chardy’s best chance came when the first set went to a tiebreaker, but a couple of loose shots allowed a frustrated Djokovic to take control. The Serb, who has struggled this season after missing the second half of 2017 with an elbow injury, upped his level to earn the first break of the match for a 5-4 lead in the second set. He closed out victory in 1 hour, 32 minutes.

Federer to play for his 99th career singles title — Defending champion Roger Federer will play 21-year-old Borna Coric in the Gerry Weber Open final as he chases his 99th career singles title on Sunday. Federer reached his 12th final in Halle after beating qualifier Denis Kudla 7-6 (1), 7-5 on Saturday. Coric advanced when fourth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut retired injured after slipping in their semifinal. The Spaniard was leading 3-2 in the first set. Federer fired 12 aces and saved six of the seven break points he faced to end Kudla’s 10-set winning streak in Halle. The American had three break points when he was leading 4-3 in the second set, but Federer fought back and finished the set with two successive aces. “It’s good to know that I always play well when it’s needed,” Federer said. The 25-year-old Kudla had saved 20 of 21 break points on his way to the semifinals at the grass-court tournament. Federer, who saved two match points against Benoit Paire in the second round on Thursday, is going for a record-extending 10th title in Halle. It will be his second final in as many weeks. The Swiss great, who won his 18th grass-court title in Stuttgart on Sunday, is just two match wins away from matching Jimmy Connors’ all-time record of 174 victories on grass. After skipping the entire clay-court season for the second year in a row, Federer extended his grass-court winning streak to 20 matches, including Stuttgart and last year’s titles in Halle and Wimbledon.
