- Evacuation warning remains for Prineville fire
Firefighters are continuing to control the Desolation Fire in the Mill Creek Wilderness northeast of Prineville, leading officials to lower the evacuation warning for about 30 households in the Mark’s Creek area.
Residents are now under a Level 1 evacuation notice, which advises them to stay aware and ready for a potential evacuation.
The fire has burned 2,252 acres and is zero percent contained. But the fire stayed within containment lines overnight Thursday, and firefighters kept it north of Highway 26 and away from the adjacent households, according to the Forest Service.
A total of 206 firefighters are working the fire, and available resources include air tankers, “super scooper” airplanes and a helicopter.
Crews are working Friday to prepare northern containment lines along Forest Road 27 and prepare roadways to the south and southwest for containment lines should the fire progress in that direction.
The fire is burning through dead and down timber and shrubs within the 2000 Hash Rock Fire scar, according to the Forest Service.
Smoky conditions continue near the fire along Highway 26 in the Ochoco Divide area.
Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling over Ochoco Divide and to watch out for smoke, emergency traffic and bystanders who may be watching the firefighting activities.
All of the Mill Creek Wilderness and Forest Service land north of the wilderness up to and including Forest Roads 27, 2730 and 2745 remain closed.
