Travel agents can do more than handle trip booking and planning

Most people assume travel agents do little more than charge you for booking trips, something most people do online. However, they can do a lot more beyond planning your vacations.
“Of course, we specialize in building travel itineraries, but good advisers can help you in all sorts of ways that most people don’t realize,” said Rob Karp, chief executive and founder of MilesAhead, a luxury travel concierge service. Here are a few things that may make an agent worth the cost.
Help with snafus
A travel agent may be able to resolve the snags that can happen on any trip. Karp said experienced agents, can assist with rebooking flights in the event of cancellations or delays.
A whole-trip concierge
Advisers can book accommodations and arrange airport transfers, and they can manage activities, like picking guides who match your interests, restaurant reservations, theater tickets and skip-the-line tickets to museums.
Some advisers charge a fee for this service that ranges from $50 to a few hundred dollars, depending on the complexity, but they don’t expect a gratuity.
Tailoring the trip
The better your travel agent knows you, the more they can customize trips to your tastes. If you’re a vegan traveling in Italy, an agent could arrange a vegan pizza-making class, or offer dining options where you’ll feel welcome and have choices.
Long-term planning
If you have destinations you want to visit, an agent can help prioritize where you should travel and when. Some trips make more sense at certain times in your life. Your agent can help determine how best to get the most for your money.
The in-town getaway
Your agent can come in handy when you’re not traveling. For a loyal client, they can make last-minute restaurant reservations, get tickets to sold-out concerts or book a boardroom for meetings.
The caveat is agents expect loyalty in return. “The more you stick with an adviser, the better you’ll be taken care of,” Karp said.
