Wife killed in trailer fire — Authorities say a 52-year-old man has been arrested after the body of his estranged wife was found in a burning trailer north of Medford. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday that Kevin Dean Hicks Sr. was booked into jail, accused of murder and abuse of a corpse. The death has been ruled a homicide. Firefighters responded Saturday to a burning trailer in the community of Sams Valley; the caller reported that a woman was inside. The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office tentatively identified the victim as Tammy Raye Hicks, 49; positive identification will require dental records and DNA. An autopsy is scheduled this week. The sheriff’s office says the couple separated after Kevin Hicks was arrested in 2017 and accused of assaulting his wife.

Girl Scouts help hiker — At a time of need, the scouts were on the ready. A woman hiking Thursday on the Wind Mountain Trail about 40 miles east of Camas, Washington, had fallen and twisted her ankle. First responders from Skamania County, in southwest Washington, were dispatched to the scene. But before they could arrive, the woman received aid from a group of Girl Scouts hiking nearby, and they were trained in wilderness first aid. Even after paramedics arrived, the scouts, who are affiliated with the Girl Scouts of Oregon & SW Washington, helped first responders carry the woman down the trail and haul medical equipment. “These prepared women were able to provide care, comfort and support to a person in need and assisted crews in carrying the patient over the rough terrain down to the trailhead,” Skamania County Emergency Medical Services said. The injured hiker was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for further treatment.
