BASEBALL

Casey wins ABCA award — Oregon State’s Pat Casey was named National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association Tuesday morning. The honor comes just a day after Collegiate Baseball announced Casey as its Coach of the Year. The ABCA award is voted on by members of the association. It is the third time Casey has been honored by the ABCA, following recognition in 2006 and 2007 following OSU’s back-to-back national titles.

GOLF

Questionable drop leads to harsh accusations — Golfer Sung Kang’s third-place finish at the Quicken Loans National last weekend was the second-best finish of the 31-year-old South Korean’s career on the PGA Tour. He pocketed $482,800 and earned a spot in this month’s British Open. It is a weekend he will not soon forget — and neither will any of the other players on tour, thanks to a cheating accusation levied by Kang’s playing partner. “Kang cheated,” Joel Dahmen posted on Twitter later that night. “He took a bad drop from a hazard. I argued until I was blue. I lost.” While the weekend golfer might play a little loose with the rules, it’s unusual for a player on tour to knowingly cheat and even more bizarre for a fellow player to call him out. Kang adamantly disagreed with Dahmen’s assertion, finished the round and went on to post a 64, the second-best mark of the day, trailing only the 62 put up by Anthony Molinari, who won the tournament by eight strokes. At issue was Kang’s second shot on the par-5 10th hole. The players disagreed about where or if the ball crossed a hazard.

TENNIS

Egyptian banned for life for match-fixing — A 24-year-old Egyptian tennis player has been banned for life and fined $15,000 in a match-fixing case. The Tennis Integrity Unit announced Tuesday that Karim Hossam was found guilty of 16 corruption charges that included providing inside information, facilitating betting and failing to report “corrupt approaches” at ITF Futures tournaments from 2013-17. Hossam is currently ranked outside the top 1,000 and has been as high as 337th. He is now not allowed to compete in or attend any sanctioned tennis events.

FOOTBALL

49ers LB Foster suspended 2 games — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has been suspended without pay for the first two games of the regular season for violating the NFL’s conduct and substance-abuse policy. The NFL said Tuesday that Foster will also be fined for violations from a weapons offense and misdemeanor drug charge that were resolved earlier this offseason. Foster says he accepts the league’s decision and apologized for hurting the team. Foster will miss San Francisco’s games against Minnesota and Detroit before being allowed to return Sept. 17 before the Niners play Kansas City.

Terrell Owens to give induction speech at Chattanooga — Terrell Owens has decided to celebrate his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Chattanooga, where he played college football. The former All-Pro receiver, who has said he was not attending the induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio, said in a statement on Tuesday that he would give his acceptance speech at his alma mater. Owens posted on Twitter on Tuesday that he has “decided to give my Hall of Fame speech at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in McKenize Arena on Saturday, August 4. The event, which is free and open to the public, starts at 3:17 p.m.” Owens said last month that he had declined his invitation to attend the Aug. 4 induction ceremony in Canton, Ohio. Owens says he is “proud to be a Moc, and I’m honored to be able to share this experience with my family, friends, teammates and fans at the place that provided me an opportunity beyond high school and where I truly began to find myself as an athlete.” The 44-year-old Owens says he is looking forward to the event, and “Getcha popcorn ready.”

NFL confirms Edelman must serve 4-game suspension — New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman will miss the first four games of the 2018 season for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. NFL officials confirmed Tuesday that Edelman would be suspended without pay for the Patriots’ first four regular-season games. ESPN had reported last month that Edelman was facing a four-game suspension. Edelman, 32, missed the 2017 season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. He had 98 receptions in 2016, the third time in a four-year stretch that he caught over 90 passes. Edelman will miss a home game against Houston, trips to Jacksonville and Detroit, plus a home game against Miami. He will be eligible to return to the Patriots’ active roster on Oct. 1, enabling him to make his 2018 debut Oct. 4 against Indianapolis.
