Deaths of note from around the world:
Henry Butler, 69: Pianist who carried the flamboyant, two-fisted traditions of New Orleans to the brink of the avant-garde. Died Monday of metastic colon cancer in a hospice facility in the Bronx.
Gillian Lynne, 92: Renowned British ballerina who, after turning to choreography, created the sinuous dances in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats,” which became the longest-running musical in London’s West End and on Broadway. Died Sunday of pneumonia in London.
Arvid Carlsson, 95: Swedish pharmacologist whose research on chemical signals in the brain resulted in a leading treatment for Parkinson’s disease and earned him a Nobel Prize. Died June 29.
